I've found quite a few threads on this topic, but none contained the info I am looking for:

The requirement list for Gateway Activation lists that you need to have "encountered" a Gateway or L-Gate:

However, what does "encountered" mean?

I'm asking because the only Gateway I've seen in the entire galaxy is blocked behind a Fanatic Xenophobe FE, and I only see it due to sensor range. I suppose I could wait until I pick up Jump Drive and have a science ship jump over to that system - but, would that be enough?

P.S.: Obviously it's not necessary to *own* a Gateway system, although that would increase the weight.

"Encountered", as far as I know, means you've had a ship enter a system in which a gateway is present. You'll get a message saying you've encountered it.
Seeing it from sensor range isn't enough, sadly.

If you have sensor range behind that FE, you could use the Experimental Jump tech that allows your science ships to bypass that kind of stuff. You should get it a lot earlier than Jump Drives.

Isn't there an event telling you that you encountered one? I think I got it the last game I established communication with another empire that owned a gateway.

Alternative the dormant gateway origin gives you gateway activation and construction tech by its event chain.

Thank, you. It worked. Only took 2-3 more draws to get the Gateway Activation tech. :)
