I could never really get into Alpha Centauri. The premise always seemed fun, but the gameplay never captured me. So I don't understand all the nostalgia for it, really. But, regardless, I don't think it has much bearing here, as it's essentially a completely different type of game.

Whether they're the same type of game is only relevant insofar as they're both science fiction. Regardless of its gameplay, one of the things that made SMAC so memorable was the abundance of work that was obviously put into tying technology in the game to real life science: there were 'softer' elements like psychic powers and a planet-sized hive mind and so forth, but as you made your way up the technology ladder nearly all of it was tied to real life theoretical ideas.

I don't expect Stellaris will match it on that count, given what little we know about it so far. After all, the entire premise relies on the idea of some form of faster-than-light travel. Yet that doesn't mean the game can't make the effort to appear tied to real world science as opposed to being an anything-goes fantasy of laser swords and death stars. I'd prefer the former over the latter.

Meh, I'm really not a big fan of hard sci-fi, as it's mostly tied to our understanding at the time the story is written, which becomes dated very quickly. I actually find it more unbelievable than a lot of "soft" sci-fi.

So if Europe has ~500 provinces in EU4, that means a European game will be about the size of an average size Stellaris game?

No. Stellaris will have around 500 star systems. You forget about the planets. Every system will have around 5 (estimated) planets too. Which would mean there are 2500 "provinces".

And... you can't compare it with provinces from previous paradox games I think.

Meh, I'm really not a big fan of hard sci-fi, as it's mostly tied to our understanding at the time the story is written, which becomes dated very quickly. I actually find it more unbelievable than a lot of "soft" sci-fi.

To each their own. As for me, it tickles me when I play a game or read a book and discover the people involved have done their homework. It's so much more interesting than just saying 'they can travel faster than light because magic.'

Don't get too hung up on these numbers, they are not absolute.

Of course. I just estimated. But there will be most likely more than 500 planets in a average Stellaris game ;)

I just corrected that star systems are not provinces, but planets are.

We're still tweaking the numbers regarding planets, but we won't have any empty systems with just a star.
will we just be able to inhabit planets? what about asteroid mining stations? Inhabitable moons similar to some of the moons of Jupiter? Completely artificial space stations untied to other celestial bodies?

What other kinds of celestial bodies can we expect other than stars and their planets?

Also why not planetless star systems? It was my understanding that, it wasn't all that uncommon for a star not to have planets in nature

Max is 1000 star systems.
So do star systems function like they do in a game of Endless Space? They have say ~4 planets per star system, but a faction owns the entire system with the ability to colonize the planets? Similar to say how CK2 has multiple holdings per province? Or can multiple factions exist within a single star system?

Judging from this screenshot it's possible to main asteroids for resources (minerals?). Asteroid I11 - 947 has a very interesting symbol under it... A special resource, I think.

You will of course be able to mine asteroids.

While it is true that many stars in real life (most, according to some theories) have no orbiting planets, a galaxy also consist of quite a bit more than 1,000 stars. So any "empty" star systems should simply be considered a part of the galactic backdrop in the game. :)

Yes, as for whether the player may or may not colonize them, that depends entirely on the classification of the orbiting planetary bodies and the player's technological capabilities. Maybe.

Will Stellaris have scalable UI to resolution? I know it's been a pet peeve for a while with the current engine but a lot of players are playing on high resolutions these days and reading the tiny UI gives me headaches after a while.

Certain aspects of Stellaris remind me of it.

I was a big fan of Birth of the Federation back in the day. I remember poring over every preview I could find... and ordering the American version of the game so I wouldn't have to wait a few extra weeks for the UK version to reach Sweden. :)

Will we able to edit that in the .lua or is that hardcoded?

Btw, I haven't seen any gas giants in the screenshots, will they be present, and if yes, do they have moons we can colonize?

There will be gas giants, and many of them have moons. Your homeworld could even be orbiting one, Yavin-style.

From what I surmised, if the average is 5 bodies (planets, moons, asteroids) per system, then it's around 5000 things some systems may have way more and some empty.

I'm curious about average number or species in the galaxy.

The number of possible techs.

Are planets just planets or ate they made up of"provinces" as one of the previews seemed to imply with sinkholes
