Also, is it confirmed that there will be the ability to create our own custom factions, ala GalCiv III (or perhaps even better)? If yes, I'm already planning to create a space Seleucid Empire. Anyone with me?
I'm pretty sure they said we will be able to customise our factions, as far as appearance, ethics and government form is concerned. They'll probably let us name our factions (I'm not sure of this though) so you could probably create an imitation of the Seleucids and role play. If so, I'm making the glorious Galactic Papal Empire.

If so, I'm making the glorious Galactic Papal Empire.
As the Glorious, Galactic, Papal Empire -GGPA for short- what will your prime directive be? Will you come to govern a federation known as the "Catholic Church" ? And what is your end-game? Will you rule peacefully, develop technology at all costs, or set out to rule the galaxy?
Also...... how will you tamper with species that don't have Space Faring technology yet? I've heard for some of them you can alter their gentic code, and there may be prositution traits ;)

That's probably what I'll do is make all minor races prositutes. It'll be just like marrying all my heirs to lustful hedonists in CK2. PLLEEEEEAAAAASSSSEEEEE make this a thing Paradox. PLEEEAAAASSSSEEEEEEEE

We will set out for galactic conquest, all must see the light of the lord and learn of our peaceful ways, by force! We will turn the lesser species into the ultimate preachers, think Jehovah's Witnesses but with more tentacles and extra heads so they can talk to more people, hand out more leaflets and knock on more doors, and Catholic of course!

Birth of the Federtion was pretty awesome. I particularly enjoyed the formation-based combat system.

So many fond memories of botf.
They got the balance between micro and macro almost spot on (though upgrading planets was horribly repetitive)
Best aspect of the game was the way the morale of each faction responded differently to events & actions.

Wish they'd made a sequel, it had loads of untapped potential (not to mention flawed mechanics and hideous bugs).
It's still an excellent game though, worthy entry to any 4x fan's collection.

Quote Removed - Had a dad
Considering that we will be allowed to make our own factions, I guess we will be able to roleplay, if not as characters then as our customised factions. In my opinion, roleplay is not limited to characters, and we can only wait and see how big a role characters end up playing anyway. I believe the character traits of the scientists will matter greatly though, if I recall the rps article correctly.

Agreed! It was ahead of its time in some ways. The planet micro management got pretty old, and I'd be so confused when my fleets lost.

Anyway, I hope some of those good old ideas show up in Stellaris!

specially considering how the original Endless Space did have some considerable fame

I can't for the life of me figure out why. Sword of the Stars 1 (with all the expansions) was superior to Endless Space in every way. ES just felt like a shallow waste of money, especially in a genre that is pretty much full of shallow wastes of money.

Yeah, Endless Space was very lacking in the personality department.

It's Civilization Beyond Earth, but it isn't considered a very good game by many (sorry). The Papal faction is a mod you can download in the Steam Workshop.

Edit: Ninjaed xD
Civ: BE really isn't that bad, but its not a full price $50 game, I feel like that is the real issue with it, its basically just an over priced total conversion mod to Civ 5 where they had some neat ideas that pretty much didn't work out, hopefully things will get better with its expansion although there are alot of issues, factions feel generic because they are all completely made up, so they don't seem to have as much personality as Civ 5 factions did, not to mention quantity difference, tech web while a neat idea is both intimidating and confusing at first and then quickly becomes boring as entire sections of it get ignored while you rush affinities, very limited diplomacy and things like luxury resources which at least gave you a reason to keep relations good in Civ 5 just don't exist, not to mention no sort of UN mechanic either. Wonders and the normally cool quotes that come with them feel less impress as both the wonders and the quotes are now made up instead of having been real things and actually real good quotes being used

Again all these would probably be excusable if this was like a $15-$20 expansion/mod to Civ 5 but its not, its marketed as a full $50 game, might have been more at release I'm unsure,

Unfortunately, so was Endless Legend. And TBH I regret buying that game. Now that I know Endless Space lacked flavor as well I REALLY wish I hadn't bought it :(

Civ: BE really isn't that bad, but its not a full price $50 game.
This pretty much sums it up. $30 would've been a much fairer price. They've made spin-off games at the end of a couple of Civilization games' lifecycles. Alpha Centari, Colonization, Revolution, and Beyond Earth.

might have been more at release I'm unsure,
Nah, it's always been $50.

Eh, you just need a type of 3D printer that converts energy into matter (theoretically possible). The problem with such a printer is that it's extremely inefficient, so inefficient in fact I'm not sure you can have one on Earth. Thing is when you have a Dyson Sphere you stop carrying about inefficiency.

It would be absurdly inneficient to convert energy into matter. Assuming perfect energy conversion efficiency, you will need the equivalent energy released by a matter/antimater annihilation of similar mass than the one you are trying to create.

Just to give an example, synthetising baseball would probably require more energy than all the nukes on earth can deliver in one go.
