Stupid idea to release patch 2.2 two weeks before a super-long Christmas holiday while knowing that it’s teeming with bugs.

Should we begin to expect stupidity from Paradox from now on? Should we recalibrate our expectations?

Yes, 2.2 was nothing compared to the amounts of stupid on display here.

It's hard to really have any confidence in them after this.

The Stellaris subreddit has banned all discussion of the mobile game:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Stellaris/comments/dige7c/the_mobile_game_and_this_sub/

The PR situation on this is continuing to erode. I hope it was worth it.
I'm not trying to defend them, but you could at least post some more context. Prior posts have been left up, and discussion is still allowed on the Paradox subreddit itself. Sounds like they're trying not to clutter the PC discussion, given the dumpster fire that the mobile version created.

Because I don't want to support a company that takes advantage of the mentally ill or children with predatory tactics.

I honestly don’t give a beep about that. Call me cynical.

What I do care about is good game design, and the In-App-Purchase-based game type is *bad* game design. In fact I even refuse to acknowledge such software as being computer games. They’re a thing of their own, unlike actual computer games such as Stellaris, Fortnite or Hearthstone. A completely new category.

I'm not sure what you're talking about. They've deleted some posts and locked every thread on the subject.

I'm still getting conversation on my feed, though, because other game subreddits are talking about it, like here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/EndlessSpace/comments/di9hxk/this_new_stellaris_mobile_game_ship_designer/

They left the threads up instead of deleting all of them.

And discussion is still open for this thread, which is in the (official) Paradox subreddit https://forum.paradoxplaza.com/forum/index.php?threads/stellaris-galaxy-command-has-arrived.1258985/ That's what I'm talking about. They didn't make it a sweeping ban. Not saying I agree with it, but they didn't shut all discussion down.

They've made it against the rules to discuss the Stellaris mobile game in that subreddit, which is otherwise for discussions about the PC and console additions as well as subjects like science or science fiction that are only loosely related to Stellaris. I'm not exactly sure what distinction you're trying to make here by saying that it's not a ban on conversations about Galaxy Command.

I often compare mobile pay2pay games with telltale games, but even those have content that's worth paying for.

Budgets don't exist in a vacuum.
No, but budgets are allocated for specific departments.

Also Paradox Interactive is a separate entity (technically) from Paradox Development Studio.

Yes they own them, but they have their own budget their own bosses (who then answer to PI) and all that. They're a subsidiary, not a department.

I see the lessons of Diablo Immortal have not been learned. Can only hope this crashes and burns even harder as a warning to the rest. Almost an identical story too. "We found a Chinese company that loves our game so much they re-skinned a mobile P2W microtransaction shitfest into something resembling our IP". Give me a break.

Don't listen to the haters! I've often thought 'Man, I wish I could play a bit of Stellaris on my phone, but there's no way Paradox would ever make a mobile game...' I look forward to trying it!

Right, but it's not Stellaris. It's a reskin of another game entirely.

Announcing a micro transaction laden ($1-$130 items according to the play store) p2w mobile title, that's based on an existing p2w game named Nova Empire, developed mostly for the Chinese market for sure, in the same week that Blizzard had to disable their account closure system because people kept leaving over a selling-out-to-China controversy and South Park maiing an episode about how selling out to China is great (and subsequently getting their whole show scrubbed from Chinese internet) is ballsy to say the least.

stellaris-blorg-china.png

It's nice we have this out in the open and can talk about this.

So when we got lootboxes in Stellaris via the Caravaners, this was not a fast aging in-joke with the payoff that you could just leave them to be killed by an endgame crisis, but a full on precursor for a yet to be announced Gatcha slot machine mechanic in PC Stellaris? I'm worried.

Oh and let's not forget that P2W micro transactions tend throw people & their familes into staggering debt and social hardship.

So, congratz for truely breaking into the AAA market breathing the same refined air that 2k, Activision, Ubisoft and EA are breathing. Paradox, I hope it will be worth it. :-(

PS: If you had just made a micro transaction free simpler 4x title for mobile with the original 2d art, nobody would have batted an eyelash (I would have bought it for sure). Did the Shadowrun mobile ports do so poorly?
