However, Apple Arcade is something that might change that. If their subscription service for premium games becomes successful, then that is a viable alternative way to make money. And when I say make money, we're mainly interested in not making a loss (insane profit would be nice, but we don't plan for that).

If I can be perfectly blunt, I’ve been tempted by Apple Arcade - a Paradox-esque strategy game that is as engaging as your PC offerings (thinking of Battletech, Planetfall, et al. here) would put me over the edge into subscribing.

The initial launch in October certainly didn’t go the way any of us wanted

Thanks, that made my day :D
Good luck with this thing, you will need it :)

On a more serious note, this is what you should have said first:

Just to clarify something, in the old thread for this game we said we would let you know when we had new information. This thread is that new information, we're just informing you.

In the future, news about the mobile game should be on it's own channels.

And this is what you should do:

Please create a seperate forum for this "game" and save yourselves some grief. Posting this into the Stellaris forum is just causing aggravation for no good reason.

As far as ANY SGC news is in its own forum where i can easily ignore the very existence of this game, i don't have any problem with what you try to do. And close or move this thread of here, please, thank you. And good luck, again, you will really need it with this :(

When will mod tools be available for this game? o_O
What do you mean? Lame MMO microtransaction strategies like this don't allow modding, this would defeat the point.

I've discussed this before here. Currently due the prevalence of free to play on mobile (inc tablet), it is extremely difficult to make money from premium games, without an existing large audience desperate for your product (Civ for example). Stellaris may be popular, but it isn't that popular.

However, Apple Arcade is something that might change that. If their subscription service for premium games becomes successful, then that is a viable alternative way to make money. And when I say make money, we're mainly interested in not making a loss (insane profit would be nice, but we don't plan for that).

We've actually been discussing this scenario recently, and whilst it probably wouldn't be a GSG (PDS needs to stay focused on PC), a strategy game would be a logical step for us.

Wouldn't something closer to the old shareware model be possible?

Like EU mobile is free to download and play, but in the base game you can only play as England, Ottomans, or Castile and the game ends after 100 years. You pay your $9.99 or whatever and it unlocks the rest of the nations/timeline.

The microtransaction model Stellaris mobile is using is gross, unethical, and alienating to your actual fans.

you have too look at the money movement , atm the cellphone game industry have the same movement of the PC + Console , and even more .

and the "system" that seems to make more money its this one , you want ot change how they make the games? convince all cellphone players to stop using microtransactions , to buy games for cellphone .

i'm not saying its right, i'm just giving the "truth" of companies. they are "very" happy to do things right, but they are more happy to make money . if those 2 factors aline, they will do the "right" thing . if the majority of the playerbase seems to like the "microtransactions" ways , they give what the consumers want .

This. A hundred times this. "It is difficult to make money from premium games" is no excuse to decide to shamelessly exploit vulnerable people and push them into self-destructive addictions. If you can't make money out the mobile market ethically, then don't make it. Personally, I'm not going to keep supporting a company that embraces such a disgusting view of their customers. We're fans, not whales, and if you want us to keep behaving as the former, then please do not treat us as the latter.

You're ignoring the fact that these microtransactions are designed to make you want to pay for them. It's not unlike saying "Hey, if people get addicted to cocaine and want it, then we should just give the consumers what they want"

Everything that can be said has already been said. I just want to voice my disappointment, and share my hope that this "experiment" miserably fails so that nothing like this is ever attempted again.

A black day for Paradox indeed.

I feel especially bad for the developers who're watching the suits give the people who stole the assets they made a free pass to steal the rest of them.

Unfortunately these financial models don't have to care about what a majority wants as they rely on exploiting a few vulnerable individuals for hundreds and thousands of dollars/euros.

It is appaling and it should be downright illegal.

i never tought they were right ; but its a model that work , and this mean that there are ppl that ask for it .

i think assuming that the majority of the ppl that pay for it are weak minded its an overstatement , if you don't want to say that the majority of the human race is weakminded .

the system is made in order to give you instat gratification , against the grinding need of the games , but there is not the part of gambling ( some games have gambling meccanics , usualy in the form of chest \ whatever and that was something that was made illegal in some countryes even) , but as cigarette and alcool are legal, i can't see why this should not be legal , its the same effect and psycological push, without the actual chemical dependency .

do i think it should be illegal ? yes, as alchool and cigarets .
do i think kids should not be able to play such games ? yep , because they use psycological pressure .

is it downright unethical to use microtransactions? nope , because they force noone, the game target is not direct to kids , there is no chemical , and there is no gambling in itself ( I'M NOT SURE THIS GAME use a chest meccanic) and it is the only way for free to play to make money .

does it depend on if the game is P2W , or is just about skins or the like ? it depend on the likes of the comunity of a game , there are ppl that LIKE the p2w meccanic , are they weakminded? no, they just like to use money to feel better .

edit: and i don't even like the game, i just think that we should remain on the logic discussion, not just jump on hate train and start to call companies unethical and that they should be ashamed of something that is not actualy unethical .

It's not about being weakminded, it's about this stuff being deliberately designed to psychologically exploit you. People who get addicted to heroin aren't 'weakminded', it's just THAT addictive, by nature. Ignoring that is the critical failure of your argument.

I think we are well overdue seeing the blunt tool of regulation being used on the sector, it won’t take that much to get the Chinese government to pass very restrictive rules and I suspect other countries won’t be far behind. If Paradox wants to get into this grubby business model they should get on with it before it is too late.

With the amount of money in mobile gaming, or gaming in general, i doubt lobbies will allow any regulation to pass. It's a shame, really but i think there won't be any regulations for a while, if at all.

Never even heard of this before. Is it some sort of Stellaris light for mobile?
A mobile game that is to Stellaris what Polytopia is to Civ would be great... unfortunately, this is not it. This is a "free-to-play" space strategy MMO that uses the Stellaris brand.

Why do you think comparing this to narcotic trade is unfair? The British Opium trade in China that saw food crops being replace with poppy fields, societal collapse with the prevalace of opium parlours and an international trade reverse with goods and silver leaving China for once, whilst far more abhorrent than mobile gaming, still follow the same economic reality:

Both the Opium trade and 'pay to progress' mobile games created their own market. There was little demand at first, but demand was created by making people feel really satisfied and then siphoning them for fat stacks of cash. The further costs to society is an unintended (and very real) side effect.

There is absolutely a moral stand.
It is absolutely reasonable to say that progression in game feels satisfying and that some entertainment companies will analyse ways to create revenue out of it.
Those companies are absolutely participating in unethical practices and should be ashamed as they indirectly inflict societal harm.

Do not support Paradox Interactive in this venture.
