We should be a little patient right now.

Patchnotes for Banks/Utopia states:

# Performance
###################

# Misc.
* Improved performance when having one big fleet selected

and various other performance improvments.

I encountered the worst lag when I formed a 1 Million strength fleet. Spliting them to 10*100K made the game run again. But it still studders. (i5-2400 with 8 GB Ram)

Does anyone else agree here that this game is completely unoptimized when it comes to end-game where everything comes to a crawl, lag and completely ruins the experience?

year 2350 and my i7-6700k just don't wanna anymore XD

Devs pls fix, i am locked from a part of your game by your own fault and this constitute a ground for refund even after hours playing the game...

i've said it for a while and i don't want to have to demand a refund, i like this game but it needs 64bits and multi core use BAD, it's just not a game you can do in 32bit on a single core and it was the worst idea from the start, i just hope you don't dig your head into the sand and are actually making this a priority, because else, the surprise forced refunds wave will start with me, even if it's like a year later.

you just can't make a game that can't even run on the best computer of the time and go away with it without even aknowledging the problem. plus it's not even beta or anything, it's a full release... fix your game.

can't even have a couple 100k fleets without my computer crawling...

instead of working toward 10$ expension packs that don't change the game much, work on optimizing it instead please.
Using a 64 bit architecture isn't really all that beneficial in most cases. It's only really necessary if the game needs more than 2GB memory, which it doesn't. Just giving it access to more memory doesn't solve the performance issues, since memory isn't the bottleneck. What it would do is require a lot of work to change the Clausewitz engine over to a 64bit architecture with little to no benefit in performance.

As for using multiple cores, that's not necessarily solving the problem either. It introduces a whole lot of potential for bugs that are notoriously difficult to track down. Dealing with those potential problems makes the development process more difficult and could even slow the game down even more. Another problem is, that it may not even be possible to speed up the game by utilizing multiple cores. Any calculation that depends on a previous calculation being completed to start can not be done in parallel, no matter what you do. For Stellaris that means, all calculations for an ingame day absolutely have to be completed before the next day can begin. While some of those tasks may be done in parallel, it might not even matter or even slow it down because of more complexity.

8-9 year old i7 920, no problems. Occasional freezing that lasts maybe 10 second but that's it, not unplayable at all. If that is what you are getting and that makes it unplayable for you then uninstall. Paradox games are not for you.

Ok, well managed to get the game to clog on the 1st of every month.
While there is roughly the same fleet power this time around, there are more empires this time around (this was due in turn to several other factors, mainly a bad start slowing my early expansion, and rampant rebellions and liberation wars on the north of the map), and literally every single empire( except a lone fanatical purifier with a handful of planets) is at war right now (Due to a 3-way war in heaven (Spritualists vs Materialists vs Me (& the Blorg (& some random non-aligneds))) that 3 of the 4 remaining independent empires joined in the fray, seemingly in the hopes of grabbing up territory of the AE's subjects while the AEs are busy fighting each other and me). (The tiny Fanatical Purifier meanwhile is sitting this one out, passing the time by insulting me.. because we're still on a truce)

With a [AMD a8-7600 Radeon r7, 10 Compute Cores 4C+6G] as my CPU most of my Stellaris games end being really slow by 2400-2450, but that is with 1000 stars galaxies.

And reading this thread I was wondering, What could be a decent amount of stars? 600-800?

I know that late game lag is eventually unavoidable but I like to enjoy my campaings for as long as I can (and the enjoyment usually dies with the lag) and I want the best posible settings for Utopia...

I am not a computer techy so take what I say with a grain of salt.

The reason for the lag is because of all of the processes that are taking place and the only way to 'optimize' that is to either make the galaxies smaller or reduce the processes to a more macro level.

I doubt there will be significant change, it's running up against the limits of the engine. It's painful having to limit yourself to small maps because you know by endgame you will have massive lag. The i7-6700k is a fast and powerful CPU, especially when overclocked, it shouldn't have problems, but the game is not designed to fully utilize it. You would be served just as well by a speedy Pentium for all the good it will do you.

OP: Upload your savegame somewhere and link the download to this thread, so people can start comparing Apples to Apples.

Else this is like person A saying the game runs fine (and it runs at 25 fps) and person B says it lags terribad (but it's really running 60 fps). Numbers beat people's descriptions, and you can get numbers by uploading your save and talking about your fps at a give year / zoom out level.

In Civ 6 a turn takes to process 6-10 minute when I usually stop playing. Is Stellaris any near? Here boredom in late midgame stopped my campaigns.

The devs never should've enabled a 1000 star galaxy. I've got genuine high end (Titan X + i7 5960k) and late game lag still = satan
It is your choice: Pre 1.5 I would play preferably on even bigger since not lag is restricting me.
Do not delegate decisions to others.
As said even AAA turn based strategies lag horrendously like 8 minute to process a single ai turn on a high end pc. And Stellaris is not turn based.

Performance problems right now are tied to limitations on the Engine. Multi-threading/etc... are not possible in many cases due to game design + engine. Upgrading the engine to 64 bit wouldn't really do very much - completely refactoring the game from the ground up (aka, Stellaris 2) is going to be the main case that we see performance increase.

As said above, they've made some changes to the game's hard code taking into account the engine limitations (simplified some loops, optimized some things, etc..) which may result in some better performance after banks.

Besides that however, nothing on the user's side can really be done except cutting down the galaxy size. Graphics can be toned down, but AI and other CPU intensive things cannot unfortunately. Via modding there are some ways to minimize performance problems, thought it's a bit hard to specifically determine performance bottles as there are no commands for modders to use to get detailed information on Sim/game engine tick speed - all testing and performance profiling needs to be done manually unfortunately (which is a pain in the ass btw).

My problem with small galaxies is that Stellaris is supposed to be a 4x/Grand Strategy cross. If the galaxy is too small, there won't be very complex diplomatic situations, even when they start improving that part of the game.

Hopefully they'll be able to improve end-game lag, since my games already start to slow down around 100k fleets, which makes Awakened Empires a practical 'loss'. Not because I won't be able to handle them.. no, because I won't be able to handle the lag from having 200k fleets to destroy their 600k fleets.

Parallel processing can not be used to speed up everything, you can use it to run secondary tasks like background music on a different core, to do several independent long running calculations simultaneously or to do simple operations on a massive number of items by splitting up the items into subgroups and processing those separately, provided they don't depend on each other.

In Stellaris that is simply not the case, the calculations are simply too interdependent and don't take long enough to benefit much from parallel computing. Occasionally it may be beneficial, and that's where optimizations can be done, but it isn't a trivial task to identify those, since parallel computing can actually slow down the game if it's done where it isn't optimal.
