Stellaris Dev Diary #133 - The Caravaneers

Hello everyone!

Today we’re back for this week’s installment of the Stellaris Dev Diary!

Now for the standard reminder that we’re not yet ready to reveal when MegaCorp will be released, and that screenshots may contain placeholder art, interfaces and non-final numbers. That said, you’re now free to begin the honored tradition of ignoring that and start arguing about any numbers posted or asking for a release date.

Anyway, let’s begin! Today we will be covering The Caravaneers, another cool feature in MegaCorp.

The Basics
The Caravaneers are space-based traders who send out fleets across the galaxy to offers you great deals! The best deals! There are three different Caravaneer fleets who set out from their coalition base in Chor’s Compass.

The Fleets
Like mentioned earlier, there are three new fleets of traders roving the galaxy, known as Racket Industrial Enterprise, the Numistic Order, and the Vengralian Trium.

They travel across the galaxy, and when they show up in your space they will offer you lucrative deals. Each fleet has their own set of specialized deals and may ask for different things in return for what they are offering.

The Caravaneer Coalition Base
For those who seek to enjoy some quality pastime, a visit to the caravaneer base is surely worth a visit! The caravaneers have some great deals on offer – only Energy Credits are accepted for being exchanged for the exciting CaravanCoinz! (Your primitive £, $, € won't be accepted here!)

CaravanCoinz allows you partake in some excellent games of chance, or to buy sealed boxes of loot. Who knows, maybe you will be lucky enough to find the most glorious and precious thing known in the galaxy – The Galatron.

Either way, a visit to the caravansary coalition base is not something you’ll regret!

Wow, so many great deals to look forwards to!

That is it for this week, folks! Next week we will be back with another exciting topic - namely the Slave Market (and some additional minor stuff)!

Also don't forget to tune into Twitch at 15:00 CET for the third session of the Stellaris Dev Clash.

Reactions:
I already mentioned it, but spending state money on gambling should create some kind of crisis, at least in egalitarian empires. In general, the idea of a space casino does not fit very well in a game like this.

Although slave markets weren't covered, I just wanted to point out that the Caravaneers seem to, uh, have one of their own.
Is 1 Pop = 1 billion people still? Am I correct in understanding that they want us to trade 4 billion of our technical experts in exchange for... trinkets?

I don't understand that hate.
Yes it isn't something like the city planets, but still a nice thing.

At the end they provide more interaction and variety than marauders or Enclaves.

Racket Industrial Enterprise

"You at what?"
"Racket Industrial Enterprise. We have brought out the Guide"
"Racket Industrial Enterprise?"
"We spent millions on that name, Prefect. Start liking it or start packing."

Saw no1 else mention this, but is there are rework coming to how strategic resources work? Or was this already mentioned in some previous dev diary and I've just forgot?

Questions:
1) Can we rename these caravaneers?
2) Can we attack them to stop lootboxes spreading and gambling?
3) Can we at least force them to stop their activity?

Yeah wiz covered this awhile ago. Certain ship parts use strategic resources as well as certain building upgrades

1) IDK. Well you definitely can mod the game and give them name change this way...
2) It has been already covered and answer is YES.
3) You can murder the heck out of them.

1 pop never was 1 billion entities. It's left vague for a reason (make up your own numbers).

Can we switch them off in the galaxy generation settings?

I have to say, that I share the reservation of many of the folks here towards this new feature. Then again I think the devs just felt the need to add a little something more to the list of paid features and to that extend it is perfectly fine, as we get all the really good stuff in the free patch and I am happy to pay for future development by buying the DLC once they finally shut up and take my money ;)

However that being said, I always felt that the gameplay features that involved interacting through these text based interfaces like the shroud, the enclaves and now the caravaneers (setting aside that the latter one feels particularly gimmicky) all feel like they are lacking the depth of a fully fleshed out feature (which - to be fair - they are not but rather a cherry on top). I actually would really love to see them being tied more deeply in the game's core mechanics (for example turn the traders enclave into an actual megacorp that allows for additional trade related diplomatic interactions and so on...) but for now I'll just sit back and wait what the ongoing development cycle still has in store for them in the future

Not trinkets! Baubles!!

You forgot. Strategic resources can be produced now by specialist in a production chains(so you can specialise your economy to be space Germany), they are needed to most advanced modules and buildings.

Caravaneers seems like a funny filler when you have nothing to do, but let's be honest, everyone is waiting for a release date now.

That might be why I'm liking this feature and having no idea why people are hating it. I quite like these text-based interactions as they remind me of old RPG games.

I mean, the casinos are silly and I never liked them in Pokémon, much less here, but hey, the lootboxes gave me a laugh.

My2c: I don't like this DD too, I can't find it a sense, while caravan could be a nice add the space casino is not (IMHO).
I find both nearly useless or really minor addition to the game.
Yes, I know, they are part of the DLC so "just don't buy it!" but I'd give them some more "depth".

Btw: i prefer Martin's DD, they are more "rich" and detailed than others.

Can we disable them, please? I don't want random space casino nonsense being constantly shoved in my face while i'm focusing on my internal development. And the random deals seem incredibly unhelpful- pops take forever to grow, i'm not giving them up.
