Steel Division: Normandy 44 - Unit, vehicle and feature overview

We have gathered as much information about these topics as we could find, there are probably errors and misinterpretations of all kinds, but with the best of our ability, using what has been stated by developers, deductions as well as analyzing pictures this is what we have.

Any correction, or addition will be put into the OP, to my great gratitude! Thank you :)

IRISZOOM engine - Eugen Systems
The IRISZOOM engine is an in house created 3d engine made by the french development studio Eugen Systems. The engine has the ability to display maps a hundred times larger than in traditional RTS games, which creates an unprecedented scale.
There are four versions known to us:
  • v1 was used in R.U.S.E,
  • v2 in Wargame European Escalation,
  • v3 was implemented in Wargame AirLandBattle
  • v4 in Wargame Red Dragon.
  • IRISZOOM is said to be heavily updated for the game, Steel Division: Normandy 44.
It boasts destructible terrain, hundred if not thousands of high detail vehicles, destructible buildings and ability to zoom in and out really far.

Battlegroups // Decks
Steel_Division_Normandy_44_Screenshot_01.png

The battlegroup is made after selecting a certain division to create it from, and you have three distinct phases to place units into, which will depict when they come into play in game.

The cost of the unit, and the number of units you can bring to the battle, is displayed in the battle group creation screen by how many cards you select. The green number displays how many units you can call in from that deck of cards. Each card costs an activation point, which is displayed on the top right, different divisions have different number of slots in each category aswell as different numbers of activation points.

on the top left corner, you'll see the division's "chart", summing up its income in the different phases. Every division has a different one depending on its TO&E & division type.
The battle group has multiple arms of weapons or specific weapon types that you can bring in, in its menu. Which is organized in the following tabs:

Recon - Infantry - Tank - Support - Anti-Tank - Anti-Air - Artillery - Air

Which is quite similar to the Wargame series of building a deck. The yellow shields display their AP power, and the grey shield the armor and there are other displays of unit veterancy, type of unit etc. Such as Airborne having wings, which also means they suffer less from fighting behind enemy line, and command units which give nearby units increased veterancy, but also suffers less from being engaged or fighting behind enemy line. On the opposite side, you can have Osttroppen, which have a lower morale, and will more easily get supressed or surrender.

To get further information, by hovering your mouse over the card or clicking it, will display information on ammunition numbers type, armor, high explosive values and much more.

The developers have made each distinct division follow a rigid Table of Organization & Equipment which forces the players to use the assets available to the historical correct vehicles and units used in Normandy 1944.
But you may receive support in the form of ad-hoc independent companies, battalions, regiments or brigades of certain units that the division does not have. Such as, Jagdpanther, Königstiger, planes, US 76mm AT guns or Wolverines, naval/railroad artillery, etc..
Gameplay-wise, those independent units are part of their attached division as any others, although they usually come in lower numbers.

Dynamic Front Line
The dynamic Front line moves in real time based on friendly unit placements and enemy unit placements.
GIF4.gif

Players are scored on how much of the battlefield they control, and that front line provides a quick and easy abstraction of where players can press their advantage. Being able to coordinate attacks or exploit breaks is key to win, so is preventing the enemy from doing the same.

Destruction
Depending on the percentage of map you control, your income increases. And the kills you get will gain you points until you win. Each unit you destroy gives you the equivalent it cost to bring it on the map.

Conquest
A conquest game plays out by each team getting more points towards winning depending on who has the map control. The team with the bigger map control will gain a 1point per minute lead up to about 8 until they reach the cap or timecap. The team with the most conquest points wins.

Recon & Ambushes
The Line of sight and movement between the front line can be used to the advantage of the attacking or defending force, based on smartly placed units on the field, and how you employ them behind enemy lines. You can see what a unit can see using a specific function in the game, which displays their Line of Sight.
Infantry AT & recon units can also move through the line without affecting it, giving you an opportunity to ambush enemy tanks and vehicles.

Income system & Purchasing units
Purchasing units is done via a menu in game on the top left, with an indication of how much income you are receiving per minute, as well as how much you have, and the cost of bringing that unit into the battle.
Each division has a different set income per minute per phase.

Air support
The air support compromise of interceptors, tactical bombers, close air support and recon planes. Each airplane will have a certain role, and fuel, which limits how long it can loiter in the battlefield.

Most units with machineguns can engage flying aircraft with differing results, also the airplanes veterancy depicts how fast it gets stressed, and evacs. Or destroyed.

Unit Artificial intelligence
Units will have a self preservation AI, which means they will take cover automatically, surrender if they take too much fire, retreat if they feel like it etc. There is a suppression system, a moral system and a surrender system.

A tank doesn't necessarily need to be able to penetrate the armor of whatever they are engaging, just stress the crew out of action. You can even use machine gun fire to accomplish this.

One of the goals of Steel Division is to "minimize the micromanagement" and so "the units act as real soldiers." That unit you sent into town? They'll automatically hole up in a building if there's one reasonably nearby, rather than stand in the middle of a field and get airholed by German machine guns.

Veterancy Level
Each veterancy level gives your player the ability to fighter longer, take more fire, or hit targets more accurately. You can call in already experienced units at a cost with quality over quantity, and you can use infantry and other leader units to increase the veterancy of nearby units in the respective categories.

Suppression
All units have something similar to a healthbar, both above their heads but also on the bottom right corner next to their avatar. This displays how stressed the unit is. The more stressed a unit is, the more it will miss and the higher the chance of it falling back is aswell.

Artillery
Artillery is very useful to supress single units, or areas before assaults or as defense, smoke rounds also have a profound effect in tactical combat and should be used if you want to get an edge. Here are the types of artillery found so far:
  • Mortars of varying sizes. With both single and multitube variants.
  • Conventional artillery in self propelled or unlimbered variants.
  • Off-map artillery support featuring larger calibers such as 180-240mm, naval guns or train artillery is said to be the simulated support.
  • Rocket artillery, in both a unlimbered format and set up on armor or trucks.

Phases
There are three distinct phases, each division has strengths and weaknesses in each, depending on both the type of unit, and the number of units they can bring during that phase. Each team tally up a total score in each phase, which will count towards the end.

Phase Overview
  • Phase 1 - Combat Recon, light units, infantry & recon. Low income.
  • Phase 2 - Skirmish, medium tanks, heavier infantry & more avalability on artillery and everything else. Medium income.
  • Phase 3 - Battle, heavy and special units become available with more veteran or just numbers. High income.

In the earlier phases, only light units will be available.
This gives light tanks & vehicles, such as Stuarts or German SPWs, a much greater role for, for some time, they will mostly fight among themselves.
And while the game unfold and move to the next phases, heavier units gets unlocked.

Hence you'll have to be smart when creating your battle group to balance the types of units you're selecting against their ETA on the battlefield: bringing only Tigers to the fight will leave you stranded with no tanks in early game.

Generally speaking a type A battle group will have major attacking strengths in the first phase, and should in the latter phases focus on stalling or holding the ground they took in phase A. Since they might not be as strong as the enemy during those phases.
The phases are supposed to be the natural progression of a meeting engagement. In the first phase you can only call in *light* units - not just infantry. This includes things like light tanks, scout cars, jeeps, infantry, etc. Later on the fight escalates to include more and more heavy weapons.

An interesting caveat is that you play as a specific division with its own strengths and unit types. In Wargame terms this would mean there are no generalized decks and you must choose a specialization.
So an Airborne deck has stronger infantry and a broader selection of units in Phase One, but in later phases they lose potency relative to other decks.
Also the income gain is different... for example an Airborne deck gets 90 points per minute in phase 1, whereas an armored deck gets 70 points per minute. Yet by phase three, an airborne deck is only getting (iirc) 115 points per minute to an armored deck's 135. This system means that lighter decks start strong and have advantages in the early games, whereas heavier decks take longer to gain strength but become more powerful overall.

Buildings
Infantry can enter buildings for more effective line of sight, or cover. It is also hard to see through buildings so they can be used as concealment for your movement.

Fuel and Ammunition
The vehicles do not require fuel, but they do require ammunition. You should be able to call in vehicles that can replenish ammunition. Different units require different ammunition, which can complicate supply situations.

Singleplayer campaign
The singleplayer campaign will not be coop or multiplayer, it will have 3 campaigns, an american, british and a german campaign.

Ok, updated the OP. I will most likely make it more beefy as I read through the reddits, eugene systems forum and this one.
Keep giving us nuggets of info! And I will put it here <3

Ohh no, that looks again like single-unit purchases instead of platoons which means a correct J2 mindset won't be possible.

It looks like we dont will see so much units on screen like in Wargame. :/ thats sad

Combat in Normandy wasn't as crowded as the eastern front or as the Fulda Gap would have been. Because of the terrain you get diminishing returns the more troops are shoehorned into the region.

Which makes it even more important to have platoon purchases, even with single unit controling, since it is needed for a correct situation assessment.

No, purchase is made on single vehicle/infantry squad basis.

Ok.
Unfortunately, but it's up to you guys.
May you still reconsider it in the future?
I kind of getting annoyed seeing non specialized vehicles in numbers fewer than 2 or infantry on the frontline below platoon-strength to be honest.

Consider that all of the screenshots we've seen so far seem to be from Phase A, aka early game where the recon units run into each other. Phase B is referred to as Skirmish and C as Battle, so I imagine they deliberately designed the flow of the game to start off slow and then ramp up, rather than Wargame's pacing of having 2 waves crash into each other as they fast-move to the towns on the midfield.

I mean the picture with the deck-cards. This cards are for Phase A, B and C.
I think thats all units we can bring to battle
