That will be a deal-breaker for me. I've never had good luck with any of the games that they handle. The one that immediately comes to mind was their handling of Civilization--we could not apply some of the mods that users had made for the game.

I'd suggest, letting us download the game straight with no interference from a 3rd party.

And it's not happening. The advantages Steam provides in multiplayer support and reducing patching overhead are too great, despite the occasional glitch in the system. And creating their own distribution system would be huge overhead.

Wrong, Civ V's mod workshop integration is very well done -- same goes for Shogun 2 Total War.

Last year I tried playing Civ with some of the mods I had found online and found that I couldn't.

I've been using Steam pretty much since it came out and I've never had any problems with it. As for Civ 5 mods there were some problems at the start but now the system works perfectly.

Steam doesn't interfere at all in Civ5's mod installation process. It's not actually integrated into the installation process, it's just a tacked on downloader - you can install mods manually fine. Chances are that you just installed your mods wrong. (there were/are a lot of problems with mods in Civ5 that have nothing to do with Steam)
No reason to believe it'll affect manually installed mods in EU4's case either.

I've never had any problems with Steam, modding or anything, for all my 30 or so games in Steam. My V2 is heavily modded, as is my M&B:W, Skyrim and Oblivion (I have hundred of mods for each).
To be honest, I didn't bought Civ5, because that's not what historical games should be like IMHO and also because the DRM shipped with the game was absurdly stupid if you ask me.
To the Steam critics over there: if a system works for the great majority, then most likely the problem is with you.

Honestly the only bad thing about steam(besides the DRM) is the support. Trust me EA has better support than they do, and I've brought many things on steam and not once have I asked a refund yet they refused to help me with such simple tasks as to change my contact email, for my second account.

Simplistic though it may be, there's something to be said for this. If you're so distrusting of Paradox that you think they'd just let Valve and Steam do something horrible to their game or the inconvenience of downloading a client (once) which doesn't even need to be on to play the game has killed any desire for you to play the game, you likely weren't all that trusting/excited to begin with.

I used to not like steam until I realized that most old games actually work on steam. As a result I when out and bought a second copy of V2 so I could have it on steam. I may do the same with CK2. EU4 is defo getting bought on steam.

You might be able to simple copy the EU4 folder from Steam to outside once its installed, avoiding using Steam in the future, although you will need it for multiplayer, maybe not Lan if that’s in.

Paradox has already said that Steam will just handle the downloading, updating, DLC verification and multiplayer. If you don’t want to have steam running while you play you can just play the game though the launcher in the game’s files just as you can now.

Mods will also still be fully supported with steam, just as they are now. I think they also said that they will be using the Steam workshop to download and update mods directly if you want, but the old methods will still work.

Do they have support? I never managed to get in touch with them. Once i just wanted to write "f*** off" and get banned becouse i couldnt play a game i bought for, appearently steam couldnt reach their servers for some reason. Guess what, i couldnt even write a simple "f*** off" message to their support. Aaaarrrghhhhhhhh
