If I bought and installed the game and first DLCs through Steam, can I (if I wish) buy the DLCs through Gamersgate?

Does anyone else have a problem with this? Or any advice? I've tried to uninstall Steam and re-start. Not only did that clear all my mods, but I found I couldn't download Steam to re-install. I had to do a system restore.
At this point, I'm seriously considering switching to Gamersgate.

Just start the game without Steam? You don't need to go through Steam or even have Steam running at all.

I don't have an issue with starting the game in the way you suggested (that's what I generally do, anyway). I was just wondering whether, if I downloaded the most recent DLC from Gamersgate, there was a way of making it work with the Steam version.
Sorry, I'm not understanding what you need help with -- maybe someone else does -- if you did a system restore I presume you have both Steam and your mods and you said you could play offline. Otherwise since you cannot use GG mods with the Steam version I'm not sure what problem you're having at this point.
ETA: If your problem is with Steam I'd post there since you're more likely to find the appropriate help: it could be anything from your firewall to malware. It's not related to the game. This link may help, but I'm guessing in the dark w/o details:

There isn't really much more to it. It's also nice not having to deal with the annoying steam launcher or anything but that's really your choice/preference.

No, there is not. But Steam works perfectly fine in general, switching to GG may simply be a waste of your money. You really need to diagnose what your problem is before taking a wild and expensive stab at a solution. Steam are 99% reliable, whatever issue you are having you need to contact their support as action #1, IMO.
Sorry to say but some of the moderators here post some of the most biased feedback.
For many people having to wait a week for a major patch+expansion is not "works perfectly fine" and the fact you don't even mention it is ridiculous and hence why I say you're biased.

o before I posted here, but haven't heard from them. And I had previously checked everything in drendall's link (and other places) too. My problem is not that Steam is unavailable - it is (I'm re-downloading all 5GB of Skyrim now) - it's just that I don't seem to be able to buy anything on it.

You don't need to launch the game from Steam (just use the .exe in the game folder), so connection problems shouldn't be a problem unless you are patching or downloading DLC etc.

Doesn't sound like you're sorry to say that at all.
A week? What are you talking about? Patches and expansions appear on Steam within hours of being available from GamersGate. In fact sometimes before.
I'm not biased, I personally do business with both companies. Both have been reliable and perfectly fine. You, on the other hand, are patently biased.

Steam has Sticky that advises filing a support ticket rather than posting on their forum for this kinda of issue. If you don't see others complaining about the problem that's the best route. You should get a response on an acct. issue in a couple days (optimally) -- though if you wait until a big sale -- e.g. Black Friday -- it may be much longer. Otherwise, if you have an error code like 101, it's probably your AV -- namely ESET. Sometime it is a country issue that gets botched. If you're using a credit card, they may have Steam flagged for confirmation it is not a fraudulent purchase. Anyway, I'd file a ticket asap, esp. if you're using a credit card -- you may not be able to use it anywhere until it's cleared up.

Best feature of steam is clicking 3 buttons to update your drivers. I would have it just for that.

If I go start up Steam, and go to my "Library", I get the following picture (which is normal):
but if I then click on "DLC", after quite some time, I get:
which remains unchanged however many hours (OK, I've only left in on overnight) I wait. And the links don't seem to work.

While there's some problem with the Steam browser not correcly loading it's colorstyles and formats, that seems to be a purely cosmetic bug. The functionality seems to be there (the "Add to Cart" links are where they're supposed to be).
Have you tried simply buying whichever DLC you're interested in, even if the window doesn't look as nice as it's supposed to?

It's a functionality issue as well; the links don't work. My inventory (another white & blue page) remains empty.
And by "links don't work", I mean to say that a) I can't click on them for a good few minutes, and b) when I do, the DLCs don't load up into my cart.

So, buy stuff through the steam store website, rather than the one in the steam client.
