I get "Game versions differ" when trying to join a friend's game. He has the stand-alone version and using patch 1.1.88, mine is 1.1.179 through Steam, we can't play?

Steam vs non-Steam, one language vs another, one patch vs another, any of those combo you miss and no you can't play together. And even if you DO get all right, multiplayer is still shaky and then only in one vs the other.
Me and a friend both bought same version game from steam and we cannot join eachothers games due to different versions? but we checked and they are the same ^^ please HELP
