Thought I might share my experience just now.

Saw EU4 for 75% off and thought yeah why not, I'm a huge HOI fan so I'll jump in.

Get to the Steam page and see a 30% positive review ratio. It's all people complaining about price and DLC policy.

I like the way Paradox supports it's games for years after initial release so I have no real problem with the reviews, or so I thought.

The more I read the more I think hhmm maybe I won't buy this game. In the end I passed on it as the total package is very expensive. If the collectors edition with all the DLC was 75% off I would of taken it but it's not.

This was my experience as a HOI and Paradox in general fan. Overall Positive reviews are down to 80% which is about double the bad reviews it previously had before this price hike debacle.

I imagine how many people are not buying EU4 as a result of the current review standings.

PS: Also I will never buy a game that has regional price fixing in place so I'm glad Paradox reversed their stance in that regard.

Just buy the ones labeled as expansions in the paradox store. The rest will just slow down your pc just for graphical enhancements. Third Rome is a new dlc model I'm still on the fence about it. Its smaller content changes combined with cosmetic changes centered around a specific nation. Wait for the christmas sale and pick up everything up to Rights of Man. Pick up Mandate of Heaven if its dropped enough by then, try to stick with buying them on sale, their sales model is horrible i'd never buy these games at full price. I own all of the Clausewitz games. EU4 is the best one by far. You might want to pick up the music dlc's cause they tend to be great but totally optional. Personally I listen to the Stellaris Score while I play eu4.

I've had a lot of of purchase regrets. However, I've bought almost every EU4 expansion at full price (I get the cosmetic in sales) and have zero regrets. User reviews rarely give logical reasons for rejecting when they're made in a mob mentality. The whole entitled gamer, DLC sucks etc etc shtick has gotten really old.

Personally I never care about the review total in Steam.
What I do care is "not recommend" comments with the flaws in game design, gameplay, etc. (That's the reason why I didn't purchase Pillars of Eternity, regardless of the hype.)
Therefore, if a reviewer whines about pricing policy, this is definitely not a sign to pass by the game.

I advise no taking someone like Granada as your first game as they are hard mode. France, England or Ottomans might be easier to get the hang of the game, and they all have extra flavor.

Yeah I meant I played as Castille and attacked Granada. I had to start again and have done much better on my second attempt. I've managed to take over most of the Spanish Continent excluding my ally Portugal.
My initial impression of the game so far is that it has a fair amount of down time. HOI4 has a build up early on and then a relentless war which I probably prefer. I know I have hardly scratched the surface as there are certain resources along the top bar that I have no idea how to affect yet.

I actually don't get why the OP gets this much "disagrees" on his opening post. I mean, I love the game and have spent more than thousand hours on it and I can recommend it to everyone. Yet, I don't think we should ignore the points he brings up. To the perspective of new players, there is a huge threshold to enter. It takes ages to get a feel for the game and if you do want the full experience of the game, you better commit a lot of money (even on sale) for all DLC.

I think it would help more as community to keep suggesting constructive means to make this game more accessible to new people. And perhaps find new suggestions for the DLC policy in case it hasn't been overdone already.

As much as some people do not care about "the majority of steam reviews", it will matter to a producer as there are still plenty of people out there that do care about steam reviews. I admit that if I see a game I don't know at all on the store, I at least take a glance at some of the reviews to see if a game would suit me or not. Let's not dismiss something automatically because we do not value it.

Depends how you want to play. Constant war or close to it is certainly something you can do if you want, but it takes quite a juggling act to manage all the relevant resources.
