I bought the game from Focus, not Steam. Can I buy the addons from Steam, tho? I wanted to buy the game on Steam, but there was a small problem with my account at the time and I had no way of knowing how long it would be to get fixed.

Thanks. I did buy them from Gamersgate, however, I really don't like them at this point. You can't install them on a PC that does not have an internet connection. You can't download the installer by itself. If for some reason Gamersgate goes out of business, and I have to re-install, I will be screwed. I realize the same could hold true for Steam, but I think it is less likely for Steam to go under than Gamersgate.

Of course you can. You can't with Steam.

Yes you can. You can't with Steam.

Well, in the unlikely even that GG shuts down it will probably be bought by a major game retailer after that it is pretty much business as usual. Though as far as I know digital download is here to stay and doing very well.

I find your post to be a bit weird. You are either confusing Steam with GG or you are really missinformed.

Actually, he's not confusing the two services. From Gamersgate's FAQ:

Can I download the game on my office PC and install it on my home PC which does not have an internet connection?
No, you cannot. Internet connection is required to install games. If the target computer has slow download bandwidth, then the game can be downloaded on another computer and then transferred in any way to your original computer. There you can use them to install, but connection is needed to sign in and start the installation process.

As for what would happen if Gamersgate (or Steam, or any other similar services) goes out of business, i would hope they have a plan to enable gamers to retrieve/back-up their purchases and use them independently.

I (tried to) read the Steam user agreement.
What I managed to understand is that in case steam will shut down, they will allow users to download a stand-alone version of the games, or give you your money back.
Is there a lawyer around here that can confirm this? The language they use in these agreements is just exhausting.

I remember reading somewhere that in case steam would shut down, some developers would arrange standalone copies of their games for those who purchased them off steam. So I don't think that steam has to distribute standalone versions of games purchased there in the case of a shutdown, it's more about whether or not they want to do it.

CIM is DRM free from GG. So in this case when you buy from GG. All you have to do is copy the exe after the installation. No need to ever use a internet connection again even if you format your HD. Just make sure you have a backup copy on disc.

The game is also DRM free on steam. You can copy the game's folder from ~\steam\steamapps\ and save it for later. If you have the folder, you can run the game without steam installed.
