Does buying the game via Steam affect patching (i.e. are the patches delivered through Steam)? Does it impact the ability to use the beta patches?

Patches for games on Steam are downloaded automatically when you open the program (I assume you can turn that off though, and you can definitely pause/restart them at will)

If it's anything like other paradox games, you can copy and paste the directory wholesale to run it without steam.

As far as I know when it comes to beta patches, we will provide buyers on Steam with a separate version of the game so that you can try out the beta without overwriting your real copy. For buyers on GamersGate we will also provide beta patches here on the forum.
I have EU3 on Steam and never needed to duplicate the game in another dir. Just copied all files on the Steam dir and launched the game. I don't even need a backup as long as Steam has its own backup and re-install features.
I thought what Steam did if you installed a beta patch was that it would just re-install the prior official patch that was on. I might be wrong though.
IF auto update is on, or you ever validate your game cache, it overwrites the beta patch files when the next patch comes out.
Do we know when those of us who pre-orderd on Steam will get to download the game? I know it unlocks the 14th, but I was under the impression that we would be able to download it before that date.
