Steam or GG?

I really don't like the steam way, my steam civ5 takes half a year to stop crashing all the time and in the meantime a cra*ked version never crash that much... But now it seems GG also requires things like activation also, will GG version becomes that unstable also?

I don't think your civ5 crashing is steam's fault. Have you checked your drivers lately?

errr, I am not quite sure whether it's steam's fault, but I am quite sure my drivers are all latest.... What ever it doesn't matter, it's all right now...

But there's another problem about steam, it will repair any modification I do to the game files... I want to mod them my self.. And I want to make different copies of games for each mod... And I don't want to start steam client all the time... It's slow...

Im getting it on Steam, because all my games are there. I never have problems with Steam.

But I think as far as the game goes, it matters little where you get it.

You mean the same offer that GG have? £29.99 (actually £29.95 on GG, but I'm putting that down to exchange) with the 2 DLCs, (and also CKI and Deus Vult on GG - I think I saw people saying Steam were doing the same).

Sorry but do we need yet another thread about this topic? Steam works perfectly for some and others have had problems with it. I've been on both sides of that camp. GG will be a little more expensive but will give those that want it the complete freedom to own their product, which is perceived as a very important bonus. I'm sitting in this camp too. Buy whichever one you prefer, in the end it will not matter in the slightest.

If the guy is keeping several installations of the game anyway that is possible in Steam version anyway. He can easilly keep those modificated versions unpatched by Steam as he can make them on a copy of the game. Not to mention that Steam doesn't have to be on to play the game.

Fair enough. I can only give my side, since I haven't ever used Steam, and I'm not sure exactly how it works with these things.

Chalkface - at least from where I'm sitting, GG is cheaper - admittedly only by 4 pence, which is nothing to write home about , but it does have the advantage of the blue coin system which will give me about £1.50 discount on future games I buy there.

Back on Topic: The GG version does not need any activation at all neither does the Steam version. The only difference is the GG version has to manually update their games and the steam version has the option to allow automatic updates or disable the automatic updates.

While I know this is possible, the reason I've always liked GG for Paradox (despite being something of a Steam fanboy generally) is that it feels you are working against the auto-updater. It is a great tool for most games, but for Paradox games I prefer just to have all the files in a directory that I can duplicate, edit and maintain multiple versions of without having to do anything special or worrying that something is going to get modified without input from me.

Isn't Gamer's Gate partly owned by Paradox?

For some reason I've always thought they received a higher royalty from GG sales than from Steam or (especially) retail. That's why I've always bought the games at GG, save when I fucked up and bought Victoria II via Steam in a fit of excitement.

It may not sound like much, but given how many times I lost and replaced my EU II disc...

EDIT: Oh, and yes, modding/patching Victoria with Steam is a nightmare.

Otherwise, Steam is great.

I have used Steam a great deal, and will probably do so more in the future. But I always try to use GG when I can, I like that I won't have to use any extra programs to play my games. That, and the fact that GG is a small, swedish site with great offers and perks for loyal customers.

Yes for all games made by paradox this is the case. There is few that they have published that need Steam to be on while playing like Magicka.

Civ5 is totally different as it uses Steams security system that some games use and that usually requires you to keep Steam on if you play the game. Any game company that sells games in Steam can decide themselves if they want to use it. Paradox isn't using it and devs have several times said that you can play the game without Steam being on and can copy the game as many times you want anywhere on your computer. You can even copy the game to another computer and it will still work without Steam.
