As I said, all Steam does is download the game. All you need to do is just copy it to another folder and vollia, it's just like the GG version.

well they have stated already that the true % that use other platforms is so low that losing them is more cost effective than providing support for other platform...or that's is what i infer from their comments
I personally never understand this statement. Because pirates make games steam-free (with possibility of installing patches!) in no time.
I preordered almost any their title in last years (Vic2, house divided, diwine wind, crusader kings).
But if Paradox continues to treat us (who doesn't use steam) as second-class (and often accuses us in lying) - no buying for me.

They aren't accusing you of lying. They are simply saying there are very few of you, and not enough to continue supporting other platforms.

And to be blunt, Paradox know what their sales are and where they are getting them from. 3 or 4 people sobbing on their forums that they will never buy Paradox games again coz Steam isn't going to change the aggregate numbers in front of them, and ergo isn't going to change their minds.

And finally, talking about pirateing a game on a publisher's own board is rude at best and bannable at worst.

If you read me well, I was not talking about using pirate copies. I say that it is not so hard task when some 'bad people' could do it so easily.
And this guy already profs it:
As I said, all Steam does is download the game. All you need to do is just copy it to another folder and vollia, it's just like the GG version.
So why make steam-only? If there is NO difference?

They aren't accusing you of lying.
Forgive me, but how should I understand this message?
They are rather few though. Just because you say one thing on a forum doesn't necessarily make it true.
I see that paradox believes that many people who complain about steam-only will buy this game.

My problems with Steam have been that it doesn't let me install games where I want, and it doesn't let me play games without it. Do these problems not exist with CKII?

First the bit about install directories, recently steam have changed it so when you install a game you can select the directory (in a limited way it's mostly if you want to install games to an external hardrive out of your steam install but it is still there)

Secondly non steamworks games can be run with the steam client off after they have been installed, steamworks games - Supreme command two, valve games, recent total war games - can only be run with steam online as they use steam as DRM as well as Distribution platforms (as well as the system for multiplayer) I assume Paradox will still be using the same multiplayer system that is in CKII and not using a steam based system it is fair to say you will be able to run EU4 without steam running.

You can also turn off updates for steam titles after the intial download so it's a good idea to do that, but if you do i suggest you make a backup of each version cause when steam does a major update sometimes it forgets these settings.

For the most part I don't care what service I buy my game from. What I do care about is the service we will be getting from the retailer. I have never had any problems with my GG versions of the games (other then the normal ingame stuff.) But i've seen fairly long lists of steam versions not starting right. And DLC coming out late. If EU4 is going purely steam, will steam start adding the DLC on the right date/time. Will the games be stable? I have no problem using steam IF the steam version is going to be as good as the current GG versions. IF steam will post the DLC on time.

Steam has a fairly solid track record with Steam-only games. A move to Steam only for EU4, which is also likely to be a big seller, is pretty certain to get proper reliable support.

I would argue that buying a game from a store (which almost certainly has in-built DRM as a result) is having a third party between you and your games. At least Paradox doesn't use Steam's DRM and allows you to play it comfortably away from Steam, just means you have to purchase and download it through Steam but that's it really. You can play Ck2, EU3, V2 and to the best of my knowledge HOI3 without having Steam running, this isn't going to change.

Additionally, see my above post for Steams attitude toward Steam-only games.

While not hating steam as some people seem to do, it's sad to see the inferior designed programme win a monopoly over the superior site... Gamersgate is the better medium since it requires no additional software and allows you to backup the installation files.

I still don't understand what's wrong with steam, it has a lot of nice functions like achievements, downloading rate of 4-6 MB, file verification if your install is corrupted, they just added a function where you could decide which disk you can install the games on, all your friends are on steam as well. You can even run all of the paradox games with steam offline. Hell im with steam since I bought half-life 2 in 2004. I've never had any problem with it whatsoever.

But what most appeals me is the ability and the platform they provide to download and install the game very easily. Yes others site have that ability aswell, but for me steam provides a better platform than the others do, by far.

You can backup your files with steam via the client or manually by copy and pasting. The Steam software is essentially just a download and purchase client for any nonsteamworks game. Titles from PDS only use steam for distribution which means once you've payed for and downloaded the product you can manually update it through the PDS launcher, copy and paste the folder elsewhere and treat it as an entirely seperate copy of the game - in exactly the same way you would from gamersgate. Steam really isn't an inferior product and I think if it was it wouldn't have the monopoly.

Inferior products are systems like Origin, GFWL, and Stardock.

Steam also allows you to back up the installation files... and the additional software provides only bonus features..

It's not unreasonable to expect so.

Gars has a point, eventually most people will change there minds. Especially with flash sales and so forth making it cheaper and easier to buy the product on Steam. Also Steam from what I know are very easy to deal with from the developers standpoint - especially if you already have a relationship as Paradox no doubt will.

There are several reasons for a steam-only build.

1) Maintaining multiple versions of the game for testing and distribution is a large cost in time and attention for us.

2) Steam is far more easy to work with when it comes to creating patches and updates.

3) Steam has about 95% of the market, so spending 50% of the testing time for patch deployment for 5% just doesn't make sense.

4) A large chunk of customers at GG buys steam versions of other games, so our estimates is that we won't lose all those customers.

5) Customer support costs. A large majority of our customer support comes from people not on Steam that has trouble installing things correctly.

6) Steam provides a lot of technology that makes it easier to develop games, which makes us able to focus on the quality of the game instead of making our own network api.

We aim to support Steam workshop, Achievements and other things in EU4 as well, but that was never relevant to our decision to go steam-only.

All great news: although the one comment i'd have is for Multiplayer DO NOT force us to use steam servers... Everything else is great news as I said but I really don't think EU4 would benefit from Steam Servers multiplayer that would also mean that Steam basically is DRM as well as Distribution.

Just a note for people worried about GG rather than using Steam, GG like most online retailers also sell Steam keys for Steam-based games. I see no reason to expect they wouldn't do the same, so anyone wanting to support GG could still buy from them. During the recent holidays sales, sites like GG and GMG (and Amazon digital) were also selling Steam keys for less than Steam had them, so it's not like there's no pricing competition either.

I've been waiting for opportunity to pre-order Europa Universalis IV on Steam. It might seem irrational to be pre-ordering game before it's even finished or this early but since the studio has solid record and franchise is well established, I think it's fair to say risks are justified to pre-order the game this early. My only question in this is how much earlier are Paradox games usually up for pre-order before actual release date on Steam? 3 month or 6 month before release date?
