I'm still going to hold onto hope they change their minds.

The more time that passes, the less chance there will be for them to change their minds. Particularly if they feel they only need to cater to one distribution channel, then they can go all in. Should they suddenly decide to open another distribution channel, you can imagine that that channel will get a subpar version of the game. Possibly with multiplayer disabled.

I will keep this short.
I have been your client & supporter for over a decade, and... you've just lost me.

There is an alternative to steam-only games, and I'm deeply saddened that I will have to chose that path for eu4.

Good bye.

I cannot believe some people are willing to miss EU4 because of Steam. Would it be one of these "you must be online for singleplayer" like Ubisoft I would understand, but because of Steam?!

Don't worry, instead of accepting the result of their anti-Steam principles and going without it, they can just steal it, and that's ok because being a fan in the past makes stealing our work fair game if we do anything you disagree with!

(and no, obviously not every person who dislikes steam will turn pirate, but there have been several posts like KyeSteltek's recently.)

I'm just curious to see how long the holdouts will last. I tend to hold grand strategy gamers to a higher standard than L4D players.

Frankly, you don't want customers who have an irrational fear/hate of Steam. They cause trouble.

Frankly, you don't want customers who have an irrational fear/hate of Steam. They cause trouble.

I do not think that Darkrenown nor the rest of Paradox are blind to some of the very reasonable concerns about Steam. But pros simply outweigh the cons. Paradox has tried hard to remain independent, but it is clearly a losing fight, and a fight that Paradox does not have the capital nor developing/QA time to manage. Which makes sense for a company the size of Paradox. EA and Blizzard have that capital to launch alternatives to Steam (Origin and Battle.net, respectively).

GOG and GamersGate is basically brick and mortar digitalised. They offer nothing more than a regular store down the street does. That's fine, but that does make patching complicated. Not impossible, but complicated. As it always has been. I do not recall it being a delight having to sit through strange websites to find that damn patch Cviilization III that had just recently come out. Well, by recently, it would usually be a year or two old by the time I heard of it, in case I was not at my most up to date with the website.

We know that Paradox has tried to solve this issue by including the launcher, but when I look at it, I always get the strange feeling of 'not invented here'. It feels awkward that every game developer should have to create such a tool, and all these independent tools work with variant degrees of success. While the Paradox launcher works, it doesn't work that well, largely because it is based on the Trident engine, that powers Internet Explorer. True, Steam used Trident for a long time as well, but has fortunately changed. Despite the launcher's wonkiness, it has apparently reached a level of satisfaction among Paradox that it is 'good enough'. But then riddle me this; if it isn't 'good enough', what do you propose they do?

The easy answer; use Steam. Have Steam deliver the patches. Its delivery system is fairly rigidly tested and it is likely to be improved, because so many rely on it. And not by Paradox, by Valve, so that Paradox may spend its time on developing games, rather than on eventual failures like Paradox Connect.

Yes, Steam technically owns your games, and if they terminate your account, you'll lose access to them, and you cannot install them without Steam (well, I suspect that counts at least for most of them); so even saving the files doesn't matter. Steam doesn't allow you to resell your games (although, this has been brought to court in Germany now, so that may change), and Steam collects information about your system without asking you first (and you cannot opt-out). Well, it says so in the Terms of Service, but who reads that?

And there are other concerns highlighted in this thread, but these are so insignificant in concern to the developers that they don't matter. How many do you personally know whom have had their Steam account terminated? I've run Steam on some pretty funky setups (like under WINE), and never has it accused me of anything breaking the rules. I've never heard of a case of a false positive on Steam in recent years either. It's either Origin or World of Warcraft making a fool out of themselves. Seldom Steam.

But - if people truly asked what I'd prefer - then it would be that the games were free (as in speech, not as in beer), and we paid for the service instead. But that's probably not gonna happen for a good while, so I'll settle for this.

Being forced to use Steam in order to play EU4 was bad enough without this crap talk.

Just another nail in the coffin.

Why ignore the note at the bottom of the post, when a previous poster talked about pirating the game instead of buying it because it was on steam?
