If I don't get my CD key from Steam before the game is released will I be unable to get the EU4 pre-ordered icon (the compass)?

You technically already have the CD-Key with Pre-Order flag, it's simply not visible yet.

So yes, we will definetly get the Compass, don't you worry. Or I'll go down to Sweden and call a revolucion! ANOTHER ONE!

There is a way to get CD key
Download Demo, copy Demo from Steam to some place else
Run eu4.exe

Your game will start as EU4 on Steam but it will still be Demo. CD key should show up when you get to start menu ( steam will open and you will see CD key )

I don't think so, it's not like your CD key is a guarded secret, knowing it isn't the end of the world as you can't play the full version yet anyway. Cracking is really only a term associated with actually breaking into or decompiling the code (Exe and DLL files) in order to disable certain checks, uploads/downloads or other DRM.

Yes - apparently some keys were released by accident.

You could cheat by adding adding Notepad as a game on steam and calling it "Europa Universalis IV" and then launching it. People will think you are playing the game already!

Well it works for me
But I got my CD key on other way.. I pressed 'CD Key' on right side of Steam, under 'Links'

If you don't see that, then I guess they removed it. Probably depends when you bought the game, because I still can see and copy my CD key from Steam.
It was by mistake that some of us have it, because Steam was like 'I am gonna release CD keys'
