I've got the game on Steam, but Steam insists on running the Steam buildbot and update C++ each time I start the game. I have to give in my UAC password, wait for the 'install' to finish, and only then get to the launcher.

Is there any way to prevent this from happening? As an annoying side effect, Steam things my total playtime for Sengoku is 3 minutes. The game runs fine otherwise, but this shouldn't happen.

Try this: delete the dotnetfx setup file in steamapps\common\sengoku.

That was the solution aver at V2 forum

There is no dotnetfx setup in my sengoku folder. There was a vcrdist_x86 file, but deleting it made no difference.
Also, 'Deleting local content' and reinstalling did not fix my problem, although it deleted all my message settings.
I've also turned off auto-updating for Sengoku, but again, no difference.

I've had the same issue with a couple other non-Paradox games. Fortunately these aren't only sold via Steam. :D

Wish I could recall which ones because I remember seeing some fixes/workarounds for them. It's just another Steam funkiness, and I suppose any tech support from them is useless. However, you might get some feedback from general Steam users if you ask around on their forum. It's a fairly common issue with the Steam client.
