I have finally decided I need to take Iceland swiftly as the Netherlands in a campaign, so I can get some sort of a foothold in the north for colonizing North america. With that in mind, I restarted as Holland.
In 1407, Burgundy finally got around to murderizing Hainaut's ruler a little bit. I got Willem van Oranje as a leader !!
Well, Willem VI van Oranje to be fair.
He is a Mil 7, Dip 6 Adm 3 ruler. Good, because I needed to do a bit of conquesting. I got the chance when Cologne and Switzerland and some small OPM's in the south (Ansbach and Augsburg I think) went to war with the Hansa and some OPM's in the north (Mecklenburg etc.) Funnily enough, my target, Utrecht, was allied with both Cologne and Münster, so I could get to war with them by joining either side. Münster allied first, so I declared war with Cologne, who called upon Utrecht and Aachen and Switzerland to attack me.
I made my ruler a general, he had a nice Shock 3 and Maneuver 4. Especially the latter would serve me well.
Unfortunately, Brabant was guaranteeing Utrecht's independence, and they declared war on me as well. Together with Alsace, Gelre and, a little later, Friesland. I never saw Alsace, but that didn't really matter. I had 7 regiments, Millitary drill and was busy researching towards Men of arms/ Longbow at the time. But not even close (It would take more then 3 years, as it was teching ahead of time). Cologne, Utrecht, and Aachen came first, since Brabant first went on to subdue Münster, who had immediately allied with me against Brabant (gotta love that bishop!) That bought me enough time to leapfrog around a bit, and kill off about 10000 troops (Willem kept outmaneuvring the enemy stacks, and raze them the second time around). By the time Brabant was done with subduing Münster and entered the fray, I was being besieged in Holland by about 6000 men (Gelre had hired lots of mercenaries). I was almost done with sieging Utrecht. Brabant didn't attack my leader, but instead joined Aachen in sieging Zeeland. Once I had vassalized Utrecht when I had conquered it, I returned to Holland to liberate it. By now, 8000 troops were there, but over half were mercenaries from Gelre. I felt pretty confident about beating them, provided Brabant wouldn't march into Holland as well. But they didn't, and I defeated this army. The Cologne regiments retreated to zeeland, which now held an army of 15000 men. I couldn't do much about that, so I routed the Gelre mercenaries in Gelre, and then went on to siege Breda. Zeeland fell, and Brabant and Aachen moved to Holland. After about a year of sieging Holland, I finally managed to get Men at arms. Holland was teetering on the edge of surrender, whereas I had made little headway with liberatnig Zeeland (I had decided to try that). Depsite overtures a plenty from my side, nobody wanted to accept anything less then all my money and a liberated Utrecht. I couldn't really fault them for that
I got the event claims on our rivals, with added cores on Friesland, Gelre, Breda and Limburg (Utrecht was vassalized by then). Yay!
However, Bremen offered an alliance, and attacked Friesland and Gelre. Both soon offered me peace, provided I would admit defeat.
Fine by me. First survive, after all.
The 3000 men total from gelre and Friesland withdrew from Holland, leaving about 12000 men. I decided to chance it, and attacked against overwhelming odds with my new troops. Our losses were fairly even, perhaps a bit larger on my side, but I won! I immediately pursued the combined armies, they fled to Zeeland, and massacred them there. Amazing! There was no chance still for peace from either faction, as Zeeland was still in enemy hands. I quickly mopped up the new regiments Brabant was building and then freed Zeeland, sieged Brabant, with that I sued for peace. Dspite a win on my side, they refused to offer any concessions. So I declared a white peace, and instantly lost 3 WE from my mission to keep Holland out of Brabant's hands. Next, I went on and laid siege to Aachen and Cologne, the last countries left in the other alliance (the others had all accepted white peace or my concession of defeat). I vassalized both and then I was done!
---------------
So, my question(s)
- Where can I see what income I get from my vassals?
- I'd say either Ireland or Iceland are best as a foothold for colonizing America in the north, but England get a mission to conquer ireland down the road. I guess Iceland is my best bet then. My problem is that I can;t seem to get more naval prestige. I want to be able to hire a fairly decent Navigator down the line, so I can extend my range a bit. What is the best way to get more naval prestige?
- What determines the price of a general? Is it the millitary skill of the King?
