This is an offshoot of the radar/radio DD but I feel Antiairctaft deserves it's own thread as it's much overlooked.

If radar gives bonuses to aircraft interception then it should give small bonuses to static AA because of intergrated air defence.

What about unit AA? The Germans had flak divisions (not really division size) which aided homeland defence and also army units. Could these or any AA help with point defence of airfields etc...

Radar guided missiles? Assuming HOI4 has them, are they only air to air, air to surface, or will there be SAMs too? What about ship AA? One could argue that ship AA is the most critical of all types of AA. Does radar tech affect that? Could be very important in the latter stages when tech levels are high.

Radar give you detection bonuses which may or may not help your ground anti air guns depending how it is implemented in the game.
I think division anti air will protect the division if it comes under air attack but not the infrastructure while state anti air will protect the infrastructure but not divisions in the state.

With conventional flak giving mixed results the Germans did research radar guided missiles - due in service post 1946. This technology was taken by the Russians for the Sa1. So it would be doable within the time frame.

I think if an airfield or factory is bombed and army flak/ AA is on site then they should be able to contribute to the air defence. Historically flak units protected German airfields when the USAF started attacking them. Also on the eastern front.

Thinking about it AA can make good AT guns, does it have a piercing value in game?

We don't know that much about how the airwar will work in HOI4, most information is very old and the Wednesday videos have yet to show more detail about it. It seems like each type of aircraft will only be able to perform a few missions, like you can not use your strategic bombers to intercept enemy aircrafts or use your fighters in a ground attack role (which is not historical accurate).

And I don't know how flak will work in HOI4 more then it will reduce the effectiveness of aircrafts (not only kill aircrafts).

I think anti aircrafts guns will have limited ground combat ability but its main use in HOI4 will be to limit the amount of damage enemy aircrafts can do.

AA should have some ground attacking ability but for game balance not be as good AT proper AT.

Off topic - All planes should be able to do all mission types but have massive penalties if they are clearly not suited to the task. I like the thought of older fighters doing ground attack missions etc...

If I recall correctly ground AA was a bit OP in HOI3, because it was so easy and quick to build, and thus lvl 10 AA defenses were laughably easy to construct and would deter all enemy planes. Based on what this thread has been saying, this seems a bit unrealistic.

Considering that one of the important land doctrines for the US is about air support coordination with ground forces, a little more info on air and anti air warfare would be a nice DD.

Agree about HOI 3. My understanding of HOI 4 is AA only goes to teir 5. You know, sometimes flak was very effective and did cripple bomber attacks. A lot of RAF missions early in the war against the German navy's bases springs to mind. Of course, German fighters also played their part in convincing the RAF only to bomb at night even though navigation and bombing effectiveness suffered massively.
