Do you know the new forums? Did you get a beta key?

For a key, visit this site:

http://beta.salemthegame.com/

For the forums, you can check the newest stuff here:

Regarding the state, well... it is still in the beta status. There are several balance issues and problems, which (hopefully) will be fixed in the future. But for a beta, you have quite a lot of content, if you want to play, but be aware of raiders, griefers and Russians. ;)

You're welcome!

Jorb and loftar did some updates in the last weeks, so it isn't as dead as some may think.

Well, the world is rather big, and the old server (Plymouth) has less users than the other two (Roanoke and Jamestown). That's because the newer players started there, and the old world was inhabitated by high-level characters, which controlled it. Here is a page for the current Server-Status:

330 users on three servers? Oh my. Okay, it is Beta, but nevertheless. What is the cause? Lack of new content? Carebear versus PvP drama?

There's still some unbalances, but the devs are working diligently on them. There's been some recent changes that have changed raiding significantly.

Did the general concept change from raiding- to crafting-game? :p

I don't know if I'd say that. The focus was always on crafting as you can't raid if you don't craft (or have someone around that does). Crafting has its limits, though, and you can only do it so long before you quit the game. Which is better: keep 4000 players around for 3 months at a time or 1000 players for a year (or more)? I realize it's not an either-or situation. Creating a balance and getting those players that only stick around for a few weeks to a few months to stay longer is a difficult problem many online game designers have struggled with for several years now.

I played the game, but it was far too grindy for my interest. The selling point for me was always the sandbox element, but having to run around for hours looking repetitively for small items and then spending hours plowing on the ground repeatedly to build small things was too much. Not fun, just repetitive.

Indeed.

But the problem with Salem is the old Carebear vs PvP debate that haunts EVE Online for 10 years now. But it still works, and the HighSec / NullSec thing the EVE-Universe is separated in, would have been something Salem could have learned from.
