I keep trying to take provinces during hundred years war, but get crushed by some combination of england and Portugal every time even after France has pulled decisively ahead. Any suggestions?

Soooooo
First of all, dont dow England while theyre in the HYW only. It doesnt make sense. They most likely wont move their troops to French mainland, so its basically the same, if England would fight only u.
Dow them when the War of the Roses happens. If it doesnt, then wait. Important thing is to not build any ships. i mean maybe trade ones but no warships at all. England will beat u in the sea anyway. Spend all ur money on troops, dont hire advisors unless there are some rly good ones.

So the goal is to beat England. U clearly cant accomplish that in 1v1. There are 2 options. England needs to have internal problem, or u need to have major allies. Now u can get an easy alliance with France, thats one, Denmark is important bcsof her navy, and i would also suggest Castille, although its gonna be hard to get. Attack England when War of the Roses or Reformation happens, or wait til they attack u. That way all of ur allies will be pulled in automatically. If u go to war with them, dont be afraid to get a bunch of loans for mercs. If u win, always take the richest provinces which are bordered with u.

Other strategy is to conquer ireland while England is in the HYW. But the problem with that is that England will separate ur lands with blockade, and since u cant protect both ireland and scotland, ireland will just give them free warscore. This strat is mostly for games when War of the Roses doesnt happen.
If u manage to beat England, u should completely conquer the British isles, then colonize most likely.
For ideas, i would take Defensive/economic in the first and 2. place. Then exploration. after that u can decide.
I rly hope i was understandable bcs my english sucks a bit :(

I respectfully disagree on the previous comment and instead encourage the OP to start a war in the moment he feels like it during the HYW, as England usually takes off and becomes unbeatable after getting rid of the triple zero king it starts with.

Waiting a few years until their war exhaustion gets sky high and signing alliances is the key: Castile, Denmark and France are obtainable in this time frame. Even if they won't join your war, they will prevent England from stricking back while you rebuild your country after putting every coin of yours in the army.

usually what ppl does, but since he said he cant manage to win a war while the England is in the HYW, i tried to give a couple of other solutions. ur advice works as well for msot of the people, but its harder to pull of imo:)
