Hi

Starting my first game in EUIV and was thinking Venice could be nice. I am still bit confused about how trade works and bit everything else.

So.. what to do in game start... any ideas how to increase income and when would be good time to start expansion etc?

Since its your first game you might want to start with Castile, France, Denmark, Portugal, Ottomans, Austria, maybe England.
Venice is going to give you a hard time, depending on luck, since Austria, Ottomans, Hungary, maybe Milan are going to come knocking on your door eventually and its going to be hard

No royal marriages makes diplo expansion bit hard...

The ability to chose your Monarch points make up for it. Select many Diplomatic Faction Doges to get many Diplomatic Ideas.

What are good NIs for Ven?

Trade and Naval are excellent for Venice. You want to focus your expansion in Trade Nodes that feed into Venice, so Religious would be a good 3 or 4th pick.

Put a merchant in Venice to collect, then put one in an upstream trade node where you have power, get him to steer trade towards Venice, well done, do that and a lot of money from that trade node will go to you, good luck

Ok.. I think I am survived the start.

About trade mechanics... I have 4 merchants, whats best way to make most profit of em? I have 23 light ships protecting trade in trade routes 8, 5, 5 and 5... Venice, Ragusa, Constantinapoli and Alexandria. Venice fleet is led with 3 manouver admiral to give bonus.

What about plutocracy?

Usually as Venice I take Naval first (you are going to need it sooner than later against the Ottomans) and then Plutocracy. They are both great idea for you and will provide additional land and naval forcelimits, income boosts (more light ships, better production), naval and land morale, a merchant, cheaper tech, etc...

Trade can be picked up later, as with both Naval and Plutocracy, you have access to 4 Merchants (even 5 with Thalassocracy, a decision linked with the Naval idea group) which are enough for your starting setup: One collecting in Venice (+10% income), and three steering in Alexandria, Ragusa and Crimea (you don't need a merchant in Constantinople to steer the right way once you get a province there, Rhodes is an ideal candidate for this).

Useful tip: When you are converting your island, use harsh treatment on them non-stop, as rebels popping there will be a nightmare to deal with.

Austria led beat down on Ottomans.. they been quite peaceful since. I have strong navy and will be able to lock down them if needed. My land forces arent too weak either. Was thinking to get naval as my trade idea is almost completed. Pluctocracys tech bonus kinda is inviting tho.. hard to choose between :)

Remember Venice has a capital located across a straight. Soo long as your navie cant be beat nobody can capture it. Use it to your advantage, drags some defensive wars into a standstill/ white peace
