What are the best countries for starting out as? (Russia as they seem to mop the floor with everyone?)

My first game was as prussia and I think it was a good choice, you're pretty powerful but not too powerful, you can industrialize and research a lot and you get involved your fair share of wars, and you can even colonize if you want to.

They do have a rather difficult event war with Austria though, so France might be a better starting country. Or, if he wants to start smaller, Belgium.

The USA is also a decent starting country, since you are mostly left to your own devices till you decide to start rocking the boat, at least until the ACW breaks out.

It seems that Mexico is more prone to go to war against the US in 1.02, so keeping a decent relationship with them seems to be more important now, at least until you're ready to take them on.

Also UK is good to start with..really!
1. You are strongest country since the beginning, so you do not have to fear your existence.
2. Largest stockpile of anything, so that you can start to industrialize quite fast.
3. Your big empire does not need much micromanagement, because in your colonies you cannot build factories so they are used only for manpower and RGO´s.
4. Your homeland is compact (and with large population) and easy to manage.
5. As No.1 you have biggest ammount of DI which allows you to choose friend and wars to fight.

Just give it a try..but actually UK si far to easy to play (at least in GC).
