I made a new career mode character.
Callsign: Dread
First name: Pirate
Surname: Roberts

The game automatically assigned me the piratical unit logo, with unit colors in black and red, instead of the usual skull and default colors.

I believe the starting logo is based entirely on the background choice you made... and I'm pretty confident you picked the pirate background in this case.

Don't know about the colors, since I never really paid attention to the defaults there.
