Any Ideas on how to beef up the starter mechs early on? I just finished the Argo mission and I have Starters, the centurion and I managed to headshot the Wolverine in the argo mission.

Any pro tips to improve these mechs at this level?

Max out the frontal armor and have about half on the rear (balance out your tonnage with this)

The Centurion does really well as a missile boat. Add the biggest LRMs, a few medium lasers and max the frontal armor.

The Blackjack does well as fire support, trade the AC2s for one AC5, add medium lasers and max frontal armor.

I'd make the Wolverine a close range brawler with as many SRMs and medium lasers as you can fit and max the frontal armor. Replace with a Shadowhawk, 2D preferably, as soon as you can as the Shadowhawk is the best melee combatant that you'll come across for a long time.

Park the Spider as soon as you can as its rather flimsy, but until then max frontal armor and give it what weapons you can.

If you haven't got the above I found the starting vindicator with Max front armor (or nearly so) LRM15 with 2 tons ammo and 5 ML surprisingly effective. Use up the ammo then move in for close range. Damaged mechs with precision strike to the CT go away.

Personally, I would make both the quick draw and Shadowhawk into SRM/medium laser brawlers, go dual AC/5 fire support on the blackjack, and make the centurion a LRM boat. however I see no point in maxing the armor on an LRM boat.
