It would be weird, but especially given the idea of pre ftl civs that might be coming up, I think an origin that locks you to traveling through small planetary gateways early game to get to other planets would be cool. For some reason you species never unlocks hyperspace travel, but at some point during the game kinda like the clone origin you would get a choice to reduce the negative and gain hyperspace on top of you planetary gateways or double down and make your gate system better somehow.

The problem with only travel through planet bound stargates is that there would be a vast network of them going to all other empires.
And how are you going to get to systems without a planet that has one? Atleast when you double down and never get FTL travel?

You're going to NEED FTL sooner, rather than later.

And if you haven't gotten FTL you can't do anything on those worlds you visit. You can't build an outpost without a construction ship there.

Also then runs the issue of it allowing instant invasions or instant reinforcing armies with a network of them for intergalactic empires.

Might make sense for commerce & espionage.

Not suitable for colonization or war though.

I don't know what to say to this except yes? I don't see the problem, if your concerns are war, then yes, that is a possibility.
And if you haven't gotten FTL you can't do anything on those worlds you visit. You can't build an outpost without a construction ship there.

Who says you can't build non-ftl ships, plus technologies for sending things like corvets and frigates through could exist, especially if you double down on the gate network? outside of crisis I don't think intergalactic is a thing as there is only one galaxy and intergalactic means over more then one galaxy. If you are talking about crisis then you can simply make the crisis inable to use them, or let them use them, it is the crisis after all. If you are speaking to declaring war and instant invading, unless you have the total war cases beli then you would still have to win the war or conquer the system and settle for status quo.

As for getting to systems outside the gate network, the answer could be a mix of diplomatic deals, special projects, or even the possibility that you can't if you don't go the ftl route. The game doesn't require you to conquer the galaxy to win, you don't need to be able to reach every system unless you our playing without victory year and at that point victory is defined by whatever you want anyway.

Even FTL capable empires aren't able to do that. If they are, then those empires are going to be rushing this tech to take over the galaxy, jump forward and build outposts at more choke-points for the reduces cost.

Yeah I should of said both. Crisis's would just spread through ti like they do with gateways, same for Awakened empires and then normal empires will also use them to conquer other worlds linked to it.

But you don't need to win the war, if you take all their worlds and there's multiple options to kill populations...wiping them out will wipe out their empire.

As the map is the systems, you do need to interact with it. Other empires have no reason to give you systems, same way they don't do it willingly in the existing system.

interesting points, ill think about it a bit. I have been thinking of getting into modding and eventually making a mod for this so this has helped me figure out the problems I would have to balance. Thanks!
