@slornie
huh, that is interesting:
I saw a map of where the starkiller base is, and at the least it is in the same area as Illum. Wookieepedia describes it as a "mobile ice planet".... I think you might have something here.... very interesting indeed.
Does that mean Ilum has been blown up then?

considering just how important Ilum is to the SWU in both canon and legends, i seriously doubt it's in any danger.

also (slight spoiler i guess...?) starkiller base isn't an ice world. it's just a standard temperate planet with [REDACTED] and forests and snow.

Yeah, it's an ice world all right. I may have tried to forget as much as I can about that disaster they call a movie, but I do still remember that much. Just look it up on Wookieepedia. First line of the article in question: "Starkiller Base was a mobile ice planet..."

EDIT: I just reread that, and I realize I may have come off as confrontational. If so, I apologize.

I think we may need more biome. When you say ice planet I see a planet cover in ice but in the movie we've seen forest so it's more like a boreal planet. If such a thing even exist.

Well, every overhead shot of the planet I've ever seen seem to show snow (at the least) extending all the way from the poles to the equator, which suggests that it is simply a really cold planet that happens to have some trees on it. Due to the trees, it's obviously not as cold as, say, Hoth, but it is cold enough to be completely covered in snow.

That is true, it does have trees. Which, to me, sounds more like a tundra then an ice world. An ice world, to me, is basically a really cold ocean planet. Tundra is probably not the right word for it, but what I mean is that it has a substantial amount of actual ground.

would sub-arctic be the right geographical term?

Well, what we can at least agree on is what we have seen and know (rather than the wookieepeida article, which could be written wrong on the "ice planet")

Fact: Starkiller base is very near where Illum was/is located
Fact: Both Planets main geographic feature is ice/snow
Fact: Starkiller has a number of visible trees, Illum does not

Presumably: Starkiller has dirt underneath the snow due to the presence of trees
Presumably: Illum does not have dirt underneath the snow due to a lack of any/all vegetation.

Back to wookieepedia articles for some measurements:

Now starkiller base is twice the size of the death star 2, the death star 2 is 160KM in diameter. Illum has a diameter of 5,870KM, much smaller than the second death star.

That being said, Illum's diameter is from expanded universe information, meaning it isn't reliable at all. Also, Illums location is also unknown in canon, its position exists only in the expanded universe information.

According to the canon information for Illum:
"that is, the entire planet was covered in ice and snow, and was therefore inhospitable to most species" meaning that the planet is effectively a water planet that is so cold the surface is ice and it snows.

The only real similarity in the two is there whereabouts locations, however we don't actually know the location of Illum in current canon.

Looking at all this information, I would say that the starkiller base is not the planet Illum, though wouldn't be surprised if they revealed it anyways XD

I believe the ice planet description for Starkiller base comes directly from the Star Wars Databank.

If we're just going off "canon" material, and not old Expanded Universe, there's only two appearances (TCW) for Ilum which can hardly be conclusive re: existence or not of trees on a planetary level (also ~60 years apart).

Back to wookieepedia articles for some measurements:

Now starkiller base is twice the size of the death star 2, the death star 2 is 160KM in diameter. Illum has a diameter of 5,870KM, much smaller than the second death star.
Wut? 160km diameter DS is bigger than 5,870km diameter Ilum? o_O

I believe this small Starkiller planet to be very unrealistic, especially if you think about the gravity of that objects and plants (so some Evolution must have happened), not to forget it must have had an Earth-like atmosphere for some billion years (first tree on Earth was about 150 Mio. years before dinos).

Wut? 160km diameter DS is bigger than 5,870km diameter Ilum? o_O
OH yer, sorry. For some reason my brain registered 160km as 160,000km... no idea why.

So that would make starkiller base about 320KM in diameter. Pluto is 2,372 km in diameter..... honeslty I am finding it really hard to believe that there is even a planet as small as 320KM in diameter, but apparently there is.

Also, the databank calls is an "icy world" not and "ice world". I believe their is a difference. I would see an ice world as a water planet completely covered in ice on the surface. Where as an icy planet I could more see as an earth type planet in a planetary ice age. Though that is just my take on it.

In any case I still don't believe that Illum is the starkiller base, but if they do reveal it as such, I wouldn't be suprised.

Yeah, I'm not too happy with how they did that. (There was an inappropriate joke here about japanese anime, bigger=stronger, and Starkiller base, but...) I'm going to add my opinion and say that they just made up a planet to transform into Starkiller base. (i mean seriously, there's a lot of plot holes in that thing)

Well, your assuming that just because it's near the same place as Illum, that it is Illum. For all we know, it's a moon or another planet in the system, or perhaps it is Illum's sun which was drained to power Starkiller Base.
