Give a division max strength that is so small that it's only a brigade no matter how it's reinforced. Then you have a brigade.
This doesnt bring a uniticon with just one "X" up. It still remains a divsion with two "XX".
There has to be a way to get a brigade up which does us the correct size symbol else they woudnt have implemented it.

Pity, I'd have preferred army group symbols, since you get (Army) XXXX's standing in for 4-24 units on any front in HoI1. So far, I haven't been able to reproduce brigades...perhaps they're only in battle scenarios and there's a switch in the OoB line to make a division a brigade.

Anyhow you have to trigger them, in order to get a unit with just a "X" instead of "XX". The question is, whats the trigger...

This is for battlescenarios, isn't it?

Can you have the normal brigades as divisions in such scenarios?

I remember in the screenshot of the "Rommel in Africa" bs, there was a division called XXXXbrigade in the army information window -on the map sprites were used-, so maybe it was just called brigade. have to look for that one.

here it is.
notice that the army is called 15. Panzerdivision and consists of a panzerregiment and an infantrybrigade.
but it says that the army consists of 2 divisions...

edit: oh, and i just noticed they're both under 100% strength.

AFAIK those symbols indicate which model the units are. I.e. improved motorized infantry (motorized model 2) and a basic medium tank (armour model 3).

Yep.

The smallest land unit HOI can model is the division. Where units existed historically that were in brigade strength, this is modelled by creating divisions at 30 to 60% strength and setting their name to "X Brigade". Then if you want a division-sized unit composed of these, you create a stack which would normally be a corps and give it a name which makes it say it's a division.

So that division is accurately modelled in terms of strength, but it looks to the game as if it's a two-division corps unit.

So that means no specific brigade counters.

Thats what i thought until i checked the hoi_counter_size.bmp file. If you check this file yourself you will figure there is infact a symbol for brigade-size units. So either it is implemented and we havent yet found a way to trigger it, or they arent yet finished with this part of the game yet.

just because its there, doesn't mean its used, there are many bmp's in the HoI folder that aren't used, so we will just have to wait for the game so we can test it.
