But...people are saying it's impossible to build a big city without mods because traffic will be horrible and you get deathwaves and industry breaks down etc. etc. :p

I believe over 500.000 is easily achievable in Vanilla. I'be heard that according to CO they targeted a 1 million citizens city, but I don't know what the actual game Cap is.

The main problem is not complexity but game slow down. Currently this city takes between 10-15 seconds for a single in game day. At this rate it takes about 1 hour to populate a few city blocks. I had to leave the game running alone for several day to fully populate the 9 tiles. And a waiting game is not fun at all :(... But then again, my gaming rig is not really high-end.

This thread inspired me to try for the biggest non mod city Ive ever made, setting targets like that kind of helps you look like the past the lack of depth and stuff. Unlocking the unique buildings can help that as well,

Some achievement other than just making it look nice.

I'm not sure what my record biggest is previous, cant remember.

The RCI seems crazy though, the sheer size of these industrial zones you have to build to satisfy demand of a population that could fit in a league 2 football ground. Especially at the start. My industry zone, these massive factories, looks like a major industrial zone and in the corner I got half a dozen 10 house deep streets. It just doesnt look right :)

Heh, I think that just gets repeated ad nauseam until it becomes "fact". There have been working vanilla cities of around 600k inhabitants on the workshop since shortly after release of the game last year, so it's clear that exaggerated statements like that have never been true. I also keep a big near vanilla city around for testing purposes.
