The method I liked best was available in some but I believe not all versions of HOI (but I might be thinking of a different game). I prefer to have counters for all ground units, but models for air and sea units.

This is a simple matter of utility. It is very easy to summarize the key info for a ground unit onto a counter, including not only numbers, but unit type as well. I always struggled a bit with the type (and size) icons for standardized NATO counters when dealing with air and naval units.

Counters are needed sprites are childish
Nah not childish, i would say that if you have sprites/3d-models that presents the data you want to know they can be better than counters. But the downside with sprites/models is that they probably will be more inaccurate and take more time to distinguish between.

Thats interesting indeed.

when it comes to counters, I really really really wish y'all would take a bit of "poetic license" to make the distinctions a bit clearer. Example, Inf brig and Motor Inf brig. Some of your fans (me) are old and have tired eyes. The bigger part of the prob is in the UI part, such as the reserve pile that brigs are dumped into for assignment. It can get a bit difficult to tell one from the other and that can lead to some rather dysfunctional divisions.
