So, quick survey. What do you set spread of land/sea provinces to in order to get a (slightly) more realistic colonial race? I'm planning an AAR and would like to hear folks' opinions on this.

DISCLAIMER: I'll be playing DW 5.1 and I'm aware vanilla DW is not uber-conducive to realism in all aspects of the game. I'm just sayin', if your response is gonna be "LOL REALISM IN VANILLA EU GET A MOD NOOB," just don't bother.

I only play with spread of discoveries set to 200. I find it more or less reserves the new world for the major colonizers, or if they fall apart, the first few people to fill that void and show up.

One good way to see if it's too your liking; play a native country (Huron, for example), and sit and wait until the Europeans show up. On 200, you'll find it's almost always England, and usually about 1600.

Plus it should help cut down on the pointless "Wars of Aggression" against nations that will never be feasibly reached by the aggressor.

Will this stop mings into space tendencies?

The only way to make colonisation more realistic would be to remove the American tribes and significantly decrease the naval range, at least at the sub 30 level. Increasing the spread slows down when the non-colonisers show up but doesn't alter the all American coasts occupied before historical colonisation of NA started aspect of the problem. It just ensures that the coasts will be red, green, blue, or yellow (assuming youdon't keep them all at war the whole time of course)...

I just tried a test game (cyprus, sea provinces 75 years land 100)...ofc in 1520 or so the new world is rapidly being split between england and burgundy (who does not even have QftNW, go figure). Spain, which formed (!) in 1483, is fully occupied by Portugal and has been for at least 20 years...consequently each of 'em has about 1 colony.

short answer: lol realism in vanilla eu get a mod noob
