I would not be surprised if for the first 3 - 4 missions / contracts you ether work for the Magistracy or are a Pirate, then something happens to have you go on your own to become a merc, and everything that follows after.

Well the first mission I think will be the tutorial I hope. Something to walk everyone through the controls and how to play so they don’t get confused by everything.

Then second battle might be Magistry Metals where you deal with negotiations on contracts and end up with being backstabbed.

This is where we may then encounter Lady Arano offering us along term contract. Well it’s just a small contract really and should be a cakewalk. More of a tiny favour really. Interested?

The tutorial mission may IIRC might, just might be a Single Mech Mission, with Lance Ops only entering into it on the second mission.

The first 4 systems include a volcanic planet and one with “aquaculture” (so lots of water) thus they probably serve to teach about biomes and heat management as well
