This post will talk about a very early mission in the game (I think it is the 3rd mission you do). Only the people who have been watching the streams and youtube videos, that has been made by all the players who got early access to the game in the past 2 or so weeks, will probably know what I am talking about here though (and the devs to of course).
Still though... be warned and stop reading now if you do not want any kind of spoilers to one specific early mission in the game.
Last warning... three... two... one... Spoilers commences.
This is about that Miner mission at the start, where the game shows you the wrong location for where the turret generator is. Not taking out the turret generator ASAP in that mission is a huge deal, since your mechs will probably be pummeled by the turrets (especially the LRM turrets) through out the mission. So most of us have been classifying this (showing the wrong location) as a bug... I as well have thought of it as such as I have watched all the various youtubers and streamers playing the game... and it probably is... but... is it really?
I was looking at SideStrafe's first stream of the game just now (just found it), and when the Miner mission started and I saw the same thing happen again, showing the wrong location and everything, it got me thinking... is it really a bug? Because there are things about it that could still make sense if it was not a bug.
I mean think about it... your employers here intend to backstab you once you are done with the mission... but dealing with 4 mechs is not an easy thing, especially if you do not have mech's of your own (which they do not, which is partly why they intended to backstab you). The Mercs have not been paid yet either, it is after all said that they will pay you as soon as you are done and get back to their base. So why not give the Merc's you hired false information, so that they end up having to go through an utter barrage of turret fire and other enemies.
This would probably have one of two outcomes.
Either the Mercs managed to get through it all, but are probably going to have damaged mechs, maybe even a few mechs out of action... which would make them a much easier target to deal with once the backstab happens. And the opponents are now also stomped by the mercs, so that it will be much easier for the employers to just roll in and take what they want from them.
Or the Mercs actually fail the mission, either having a compleat team wipe, or withdrawing having been chewed up pretty badly... and considering how desperate the unit is for cash right now they might stay longer then they should in such a scenario (so higher chance of wipe, or more damage befor the retreat)... but not befor they have cause some pretty severe damage to the opposition. Which will make it much easier for the employers to take care of the remaining mechs (if they retreat)... and then deal with the opponents them selves afterward.
Either way... it is a win/win scenario for the employers no matter what the outcome is... unless... of course... the player/mercs notice the "mistake" and go for the 3rd option... that of going to the right location and taking out the turret generator ASAP, and then stomping the rest of the opponents, and finally stomping the employers for backstabbing them. XD
So yeah... this is/was probably still just a bug. But... as such it would still makes perfect sense if it was not a bug, atleast in the context of the mission and the employers intentions once you are done with the mission... that this could actually have been done on purpose by the devs. And not only for story reasons... but maybe even to teach the players to actually take a good look at the map once you are there to see what's what, and to not always take your employers word for it when it comes to the intel they supply you with both befor and during the mission. I do seem to recall having seen people play missions where there where a lot more opponents then what was advertised in the mission info after all.
Like I said, it is/was still probably just a bug... but it made me eventually question if it actually is once I thought about it a bit more.
Thoughts?
