The more you rely on lots of small hits, the harder it is to destroy the APC's (who're far hardier than they probably should be for how fast they move though) since spreading damage across the little buggers is disturbingly easy to do without the use of called shot. If you're bringing something to punch holes and some critseekers though, it's nowhere near as much of a hassle, though RNG can still sometimes decide it doesn't like you.
The layout of the base gives a pretty solid indication of where stuff is going to come from since the South and East roads don't really lead anywhere, so you can concentrate a pair of 'mechs to the North and leave 1 'mech to the west and you should be good. I certainly don't think assaults are required (though they certainly do help), but I also wouldn't want to try and do this with nothing but mediums either.
The mission brief should be enough to indicate to any genre savy player that you're going to need a fast heavy or well armed fast medium to defend that field hospital, but depending on where you put the dedicated runner in your lineup will affect where the computer places it in deployment. My Grasshopper ended up in the right spot, but if it had been on the far side of the base, I doubt it would have made it in time as it was much closer than I would have liked as it was.
I will definately second the turrets coming online in time to clear out a single Panther decidedly underwhelming. I'd suggest that they should be online from the start, but we should be facing much heavier opposition as the current trickle of lights and mediums is pretty disappointing for a base assault. That'd give the feeling that the turrets are important and that this was an actual base assault rather than a recon-in-force sort of deal.
