The more you rely on lots of small hits, the harder it is to destroy the APC's (who're far hardier than they probably should be for how fast they move though) since spreading damage across the little buggers is disturbingly easy to do without the use of called shot. If you're bringing something to punch holes and some critseekers though, it's nowhere near as much of a hassle, though RNG can still sometimes decide it doesn't like you.

The layout of the base gives a pretty solid indication of where stuff is going to come from since the South and East roads don't really lead anywhere, so you can concentrate a pair of 'mechs to the North and leave 1 'mech to the west and you should be good. I certainly don't think assaults are required (though they certainly do help), but I also wouldn't want to try and do this with nothing but mediums either.

The mission brief should be enough to indicate to any genre savy player that you're going to need a fast heavy or well armed fast medium to defend that field hospital, but depending on where you put the dedicated runner in your lineup will affect where the computer places it in deployment. My Grasshopper ended up in the right spot, but if it had been on the far side of the base, I doubt it would have made it in time as it was much closer than I would have liked as it was.

I will definately second the turrets coming online in time to clear out a single Panther decidedly underwhelming. I'd suggest that they should be online from the start, but we should be facing much heavier opposition as the current trickle of lights and mediums is pretty disappointing for a base assault. That'd give the feeling that the turrets are important and that this was an actual base assault rather than a recon-in-force sort of deal.

The problem is that like other missions with vehicles, wheeled vehicles simply move way way too fast on roads. These are very heavy military vehicles, not sports cars.

add in the "magic" of 95% not being 95% and boom failed mission.

The "magic" of 95% being ... more than 95%? Or do you mean the streak breaking? 'Cause if it's the streak breaking, it shouldn't come into effect against the frist few shots (which is where the issues are because you should be shooting the APC's first).

i ran 2 assaults a heavy and 1 medium and had no problems, i restarted when i couldnt get the barracks in time with 2 heavies and 2 assaults, mission isnt that hard.

and my medium had three meidum lasers and two srm 6's, getting up there i lost the med lasers and just shot the APC with the SRMs and killed it.

mission wasn't hard at all. hard part was buying back a medium just so i could make it to the bonus objective, the medium has been sold off since then

That mission has way too thin a margin for error. If you go in to that without mechs with decent firepower you probably aren't going to stop those NPCs. That Barracks APC is the worst.

Also, while I accomplished all objectives, the missions was over before the useless turrets even got a shot off, they may as well not even have existed.

Yeah, the turret thing is a trap, you will not get any decent help compared to, let's say - attacking Panzyr.

And I agree with what was voiced many times in here - situation where you have meta to finish the side objective is not good. And the fact the mission leaves pretty much zero margin for error to complete side objective even if you know to sprint there from round 1.

wasn't that hard to be honest, I underestimated how fast the apc arrived at the secondary objective, so after completing it, I decided to just load in and do it again to gain the secondary objective bonus. The trick I found was to just send a medium mech (hunchback in my case) sprinting directly up to the secondary objective. shooting at the apcs is kind of pointless unless it's an assault mech that can alpha them in one go (in that case you can have 1 mech stand near the centre of the base and take out any vehicles that are outside of melee range), your best best is to just stomp on them. This applies for every vehicle type in the game. Medium mechs and up will 1 hit them if you use melee, whereas light mechs are not guaranteed to 1 hit tsnks etc. Ignore the mechs otherwise you will fail after the first phase, the turrets will make shot work of them anyway once they are up and running :)

Sidenote- the speed and durability of those APCs that I despise made the first half of the last campaign mission the easiest and funniest thing in the world. For once...

Cruised through this one, but the window for getting the APC headed to the barracks is pretty tight. Luckily, my PC runs a Kintaro with max JJ, and I was able to just dash up there and solo it.

I think I stomped on 3/6 APCs.

95% is in no way 95% in this game. Its more like 75-80% at best. In this case I lost because my Battlemaster missed with over 50% of its weapons despite across the board 95% to hit rating shown. Even the missiles were 50%.

Response to the OP (without reading 4 pages): There is no way going in to know that you will need a light, fast mech. A jumpy Highlander (I have 4 HGNs, 1 BNS, 1 BLR, 1 STK) isn't fast enough to even get in sight of the barracks. I don't have anything lighter than 55 tons, and nothing equipped for battle.

The barracks is an auto-fail for me.

This is the only mission i reloaded. It was bad. Super badly designed. So bad in fact that in the same turn you get a warning "danger the apcs are close you have to stop them", another apc goes and drives right in and fails the mission. Obviously a bug or missed design choice as why would you bother having a dialog box if the event is already locked in to happen (you dont get to act after the text warning and before the apc moves).

My fail literally was this:

Apc spawns in sight and moves up
My highlander indirect lrm20s it
My BATTLEMASTER assault unloads an alpha strike of medium lasers, srms and machine guns at point blank, everything hits.
Apc drives in and i fail.

I reloaded and my battlemaster blew it to hell instantly... my failed attempt was 100% poor RNG for a single round at the start of the mission. Just badly designed.

Oh and i sprinted a wolverine directly towards the barracks for 3 turns and failed before even seeing the apc. Baaaaàd mission. Lol

Anything over 50% is actually slightly higher than indicated, anything lower is lower than indicated, but there's also a streak breaking mechanism in there too.

You simply had bad luck and remembered it.

I secured the Barracks by moving a mech towards the barracks, using sensor lock, then blowing it to hell with a separate LRM boat. More than one way to skin a cat.

Dropped in with the APC. I thought it was 2 apcs and ran and stomped one with my battlemaster, then it was 60 srm to the face for my trouble.

Pilot was only in medical for 40 or so days, so I got off light...

I just said screw the barracks when I saw how fast that APC moved. I brought 2x Highlander (1 the special one) a lrm 50 stalker, and black knight. No APC aside the barracks 10 ton lived more then a round vs that firepower.
