Well I am just watching Cohh's stream of the Argo retrieval mission and the map you find it on is just fantastic.

Cohn needs to pay more attention to his damage output. IDK what he was thinking towards the end of the mission, but it cost him dearly.

Also, someone please tell him about prioritizing his mech work orders. (45 days to add weapons to his new mech)

One thing about Cohh's stream is he hasn't noticed the called shot/aimed shot percentages that are displayed and he kept concentrating on going for head shots when he only had a 2% chance. So he was wasting his chances to knock out mechs by trying for the Golden BB shots but he was only using weapons that couldn't do it unless they all hit the head.

But I do love his expressions when things are found that shock him or when something doesn't go his way or when they do.

Well its only matter of focussed fire, it is not a wrong approach to skew the chances to a headshot if your goal is to salvage more parts. just because it only shows 2% extra hit chance does not mean its over all lower.

No, it is a 2% chance to hit that section if your weapon hits at all.

So if you do an aimed shot to the head with a 60% chance to hit shot, you roll to hit then you roll to see if you hit the head. It isn't a 62% chance to hit the head.

So he was doing that aimed shot and hitting but wasting the aiming by trying to hit the head when his pilots couldn't take the most advantage of it.

i do understand how the system works so again:

if he had a 60% chance to hit he would have a 60% chance to hit, it is irrelevant which part of the mech he is aiming at. Of these 60% there is a <1% chance to hit the head normally. Selecting the head in a aimed shot vastly increases the chance to hit that part (roughly tripling the chance! even if it ends up only 2%) which can easily destroy the unit both through headcapping and pilot death and enables you to salvage a lot of parts.

I do understand that it is often a "better idea" (as in you have higher chances to actually cripple or destroy the mech) to select the LT for example to shoot of the arm but that does not make the called shot to the head a bad idea, it all depends on what you want to achieve.

I think that we are concentrating too much on the details guys. He's had a total of 6 or 7 hours exposure to this game in his life. He hasn't been living it for months/years like the rest of us. I too found myself yelling at the screen, "No! Not there, don't go there! Reserve, reserve, reserve!!" But I think some of it is just playing to the audience and what makes for a good stream, not what makes for great tactics. And he is saying repeatedly how much fun he is having, so who cares? This guy is helping "In success" big time.

So, bad tactics character only adding 1% to the called head shot? That would still just add 1% if he called shot to the torso? Almost seems like precision shot for rookies is best used for hitting evasive targets. I am still waiting to see targeting computers. I am guessing that they will be rare/lostech, but still in the game. Otoh, nobody in the HBS tournament used them.

Nope, aimed/called shots to the other sections of the mech are more than 1%. The head is just a special case in that it is very, very difficult to hit even if you aim at it with aimed/called shots.

You mean this one? The one that adds 5 damage to every melee attack that hits?

One thing I noticed from his stream is the number of enemy 'Mechs that have had the pilot incapacitated. It seems to be a side effect of adding pilot damage from destroying side torsos, and may be a viable way to increase your salvage especially in the early game. So for example, if you get one natural headshot on a PNT with a missile and then later it falls, you could potentially salvage 3 'Mech parts if you destroy the LT (which doesn't contain anything useful) and kill the pilot.

As a further thought: 'Mech salvage is so abstracted that you can kill a 'Mech down to a head on a CT and still come away with 3 'Mech part salvage. So you can destroy both side torsos if you don't care about destroying the components there.

The problem comes when you don't have any weapons that can get the headcap by themselves.

If you fire two weapons and need both of them to hit the head, it's a 2% chance of a 2% chance... or 0.04% after to-hit chances. Slightly higher if you need "just" two out of three or more weapons, but still not even remotely worth trying.

The headhits also result in Pilot injuries including the fact that the pilot most likely already suffered one due to you being able to call a shot.

In the end i would probably never do it in a skirmish unless its a hail mary i lose if i dont kill this mech in this shot situation. It has more use in the campaign though as you want to destroy an enemy in a specific way.

I am not trying to say that aiming at the head is the be all end all or even a good option most of the time, it is however at the same time not "wasting ones chances" including the fact that it only chances the weighting so even if you try to hit the head you will most likely still hit another optimally already stripped critical location it is not really wasted in any way.
