Will-nilly splitting of trade nodes is not desirable, as it complicates the system and lag. However, I think the splits I suggest below provide gameplay benefit enough to outweigh those considerations.

English channel
the English channel right now includes both the Dutch and English lands, both of which are major colonizers (when the Dutch show up). as it works now, the benefit equally from each others colonial trade, which I think is undesirable. for this reason, the nodes ought to be split. a problem might arise that the trade direction arrows could look ugly depending on how they are done.

Sevilla
Similar situation as English channel, between Portugal and castile. they both benefit equally from eachothers colonial trade, when historically they fought over colonizing rights a lot, and should in game too. the trade split does not need to follow exactly the borders, but should mostly. if this is done, it would be interesting to make the portugese node flow into the dutch node (since the dutch benefitted very much historically from the portugese spice trade), but this would result in criss-crossing over trade lines visually.

Ivory coast
in order to benefit from asian trade as a european, you need to either totally dominant the large ivory coast node (because of trade propagation from other nodes), or set up a collection node in asia. to remedy this, the ivory coast should be split into 2 or 3 different nodes, some of which receiving trade power from nodes beyond the cape (to prevent the cape becoming a new ivory coast).

--------------
I think these changes would greatly benefit games, especially for players who play colonial games.

As a European nation, all you need for Asian trade is the Cape.
in my experience, no. cape is a fairly small (in terms of trade power) node, next to the ivory coast, who will pull a good deal of propagation from cape. the only way around this is tons of light ships in cape, or to also control the ivory coast. Part of my goal with this suggestion was to allow there to be multiple countries benefitting from their own separate Asian trading empires.

I don't think that giving the English an automatically-monopolized node would create more competition between the English and the Dutch. I always found it charming how the Continent and England would fight over trade shares.

Generally, I think that most nodes shouldn't be owned by one sole monopolist. Instead, several countries should compete over Centers of Trade.

historically, Portugal and Spain competed over trade away from their homeland, in a bid to bring it back to themselves. however, this behavior makes no sense in game, since they each benefit either way since they share home node.

the proposals I made could be ignored, if a mechanic was introduced that increased your share of a node if you brought in a lot of trade power. in the current system, trade you bring ends up in other people's ports in the examples I gave (aside from the measly homenode buff per merchant transferring trade power).
