disclaimer: this idea was written down in 5 minutes and has probably not been very well thought out. There's a chance I'm overcomplicating the last days of a game that for all intends and purposes should be over by then. That said, what do you think of the following:
----------

First a few lines of background to show where the idea came from:
A while ago I played a game of HOI3 as the USA. Due to a heavy focus on the Pacific theatre I failed to notice the turing of the tide in Europe, and suddenly saw the Soviets liberate Poland.
Immediatly, I scrambled forces to try and liberate as much as possible. Obviously, such a hurried invasion was a problematic event. There were still many German divisions occupying France, so I decided to strike in Italy first.

Landings in the south and centre quickly linked up, but I wasn't fast enough and the Soviets occupied the northeast of Italy, including 1 of the cities required to release the country upon surrender. I owned the other 3.

----

Now, is't this situation very similar to what happend to other countries IRL? Germany was split in a few occupation zones, pretty much where the armies halted, resulting eventually in 2 Germanies.
Korea split in half for the same reason. resulting in war a few years later.
Greece is a different case as it erupted in civil war between various resistanc armies after the Germans left. But it's a different, though somewhat similar scenario. Again there is 1 country in the wake of conflict left in control of rival factions.

-------

Now, I can think of 3 post-WW2 instances immediatly where this issue occured (Germany, Greece, Korea). But if the war had progressed even slightly different (which in HOI is almost always the case) these ideological borders would probably end up somewhere completely different.
Would it therefore be a good idea to allow for these nation splits to happen to all nations, and not just those that had one IRL? We had East and West Germany because that's how the war ended. What if the fronts had met up halfway in Poland? (ignoring the quircks caused in a war against Germany with all of Germany occupied, but you get what I mean). Or what if Stalin had pressed hard through the Balkans and taken Northern Italy before the Allies could?

summarizing
most likely, these kind of situations will only occur at the end of WW2, so I'm not sure how important or unimportant such events might be. the more I think of it actually, the more it turns into a Cold War extended timeline idea that would be best syited for a mod.

comments, thoughts, feedback or just telling me it's crazy is appreciated.

Most Partitions of countries were preset in difference conferences during the war. Both the western and the eastern allies kept (most) of their promises. The only way Stalin really pushed the allies was with creation of the pro-soviet government in Poland and the way the new elections played out. American armies where retreaded in Germany behind the future border of the DDR if I remember correctly. The same for Korea, the Division at the 38th parallel was preset in an agreement between the USSR and the US. The same for Greece, Stalin didn't support the Communist partisans, because Greece was a part of the sphere of influence of the U.K. Other examples are Austria and even in some way Vietnam. Austria was till 1955 occupied in a similar way as Germany, but the great powers restored her Independence after the concession that Austria stayed neutral in the cold war.

Your idea has the possibility to extend the end game of HoI4, but doesn't reflect the real situation of how the division the post-war world took place.

He makes a good point.

Yes the split was agreed upon pre surrender but really only to reflect facts on the ground.

Korea was the exception since the Allies had no tropps there and I'm not sure why you brought up Vietnam considering it was actually liberated by troops from the Republic of China and the Soviets had no sway.

I think it would be a good idea to make sure that every nation in Europe and maybe some of the ones in the Middle East and Asia, had default "communist" and "capitalist" options and if the war ends with Allies and Soviets splitting the territory then they both liberate their versions of the country.

It wouldn't be that hard to do and since the game kind of ends after Axis surrender anyway, it would be nice just for flavor.

Ignore the ramble about Vietnam, I should've put that differently. I was thinking it up and writing it down in a hurry during a short workbreak.

Porkman, you got the gist of what I meant across a lot clearer than I did, thanks. And yes I agree it's mostly flavour, although perhaps it would allow for some interesting WW3 scenarios. Taking this old game of mine as an example again: There would have been 2 Italian states in addition to 2 Germanies, yet only 1 Korea.

Crucial part of the game? Certainly not. Interesting? I think it is.

Why does it look like this? because i wanted it to now let's try and guess what countries were lucky to be "liberated" by the Soviets and which ones were actually liberated by the Americans.

This has to be a trick question because no superpower ever really liberates anyone, cause they are always in the business of curtailing the sovereignty of smaller nations :).
