Is it fair that China and Japan have the same speed of the increase of literacy like the european countries?
dozens of alphabets and thousands of characters (I assume 8 thousand) are not the same.
I spent 2 years in China to learn how to read and write, and after the third class I can still write essays.
Japanese too, their each character has at least 3 pronouncation.(while most chinese ones only one)

There have been studies which prove that if you're born in China and educated in Chinese, you learn it at the same speed as any European/American child.

The only difference is that they keep studying new characters all the time and have to keep memorising them.

That seems an awkward statement.... but yeah your native language/alphabet that you're exposed to all your life is generally no more difficult then anything else. Chinese know their written language is difficult, they've openly admitted it. But its theirs and they've had it now pretty much unchanged for thousands of years, so something's gotta be working right.

Maybe the same speed for children, but not for adults.

If you try to recognize the alphabets (how to spell them) of Russian or Korean, you can get it in one day.
But not for Chinese and Japanese.

But that's the whole point.
China is filled with ... well, Chinese, born and raised there.
So it's normal to assume their rate of education is the same as everywhere else.
