From my experience DLC generally doesn't depend on another DLC, though patches sometimes have, so I guess that is an option.
Wiz has repeatedly noted that several features in other Paradox games are unlocked by having multiple DLCs. They can absolutely expand and add onto these mechanics later if they want to, either as patches for the DLC itself or as tie-in features as part of other future DLCs.

I wonder if there will ever be any more paths in the future. I personally doubt it since ascension perks are an expansion-feature, and I can't think of any new, additional ones.

From my experience DLC generally doesn't depend on another DLC, though patches sometimes have, so I guess that is an option.
I was on the same misconception, until Wiz pointed out that he could just allow Multiple DLC to unlock a feature. In retrospect it is a simple or statement. And in retrospect I feel somewhat silly that it did not occur to me myself.

Lots of cool ideas for machine empires here, but I'm not seeing much love for the genetic engineering branch. Are they not as popular as the other two?
I've got the impression that synth path was most popular after ascension announce, but psionic path wasn't discussed more than genetic one until recent diary.
After all genemodding is the only ethics-free of them all, so it's a choice for a majority of empires, which means it should be both interesting and flexible enough.
For example xenophobes and xenophiles would have very different use for it. Xenophiles would want to expand advantages and neutralize weaknesses of all their subject, but xenophobes would never give their slaves (or food) an edge in anything.

Just hoping for massive boosts to science and more awesome technologies to research to destroy the space psychics.

Indeed! Looking forward to possibly forming my own Psi Stalker corps.. and judging by your forum username, I'm wondering if you get that reference ;)

I assume how this is going to work with regard to ascension perks is that the bonus APs will be unlocked by more than one DLC but those iconic to a DLC, like megastructures or ascension paths for Utopia, will be limited to that DLC.

I don't know what creating supersoldiers have to do specifically with a xenophobic empire, and rather with a militarist empire. Anyways, genetic manipulating can be used for much more stuff.

Most other cases. It would be sort of weird if one ethic and not its counterpart had an ascension path, and if you don't have any of the three ethics... I bet the genetic path is the generic path, allowing you to pick a path even if you lack spiritualist or materialist. You could always of course pick neither since they apparently needs to be properly focused on, but always having an option helps.

Sorry, if you didn´t get the WH40K reference...
