What would be interesting is if you could, for example, place a tank in one of the "main slots" and it'd be a larger unit, or place it in the reserve slots and it'd be a small attachment. Sounds like a good, streamlined way of handling it.

Commandos are in the BlackICE mod, and as far as I understand they are these "omgz l33t specops" units that significantly add to the division's fighting ability, but are very small (300 men or so) and cost a good deal to create. Would indeed be interesting to have in HOI4. Not something you could attach to every single division, but you could have "elite divisions" that you built in very small numbers, and which performed a bit better than your regular forces.

Give me motorized mortar battalions, flame tank battalion and amphibious heavy AA/AT battalions.
You can have them - in mods. Except the flame tanks. They should in vanilla just for the animations on the map when training or in combat.

It all comes down to the fact that we don't know whether the support units come in one size only, or if we can vary the amount in one type of division versus another. Obviously, techs and doctrines will affect the size and composition of those support units, and will affect ALL of them. If I've got a large division with 3 infantry regiments, does it always get the same amount of ART as a division with one regiment, or else none at all? Can I specify less guns in one? Can I assign older and smaller guns to one versus another, without affecting infantry weapons?

I think I've read something to the contrary, but I really do hope we can choose to distribute equipment as we please, should we see the need. As in, "these divisions get priority for the new Panzer IV tanks", or "this division gets the D variant tanks, and this one gets the F variants".

The division templates sets the standard for similar divisions; IE. Infantry, or tank divisions. Podcat did say, sometime ago, that we can spend XP to create new templates or update old templates. When we change a particular template the game engine will update all the divisions that are linked to the template. He gave the example (iirc) of Germany having a choice to either create a new medium tank division template when the PzIII/IV are developed and keep the existing Pz II divisions as is, or update the Pz II divisions to PzIII/PzIV tank battalions.

Pz II are light tanks while III and IV are medium which is why you need to change the division makeup.

Going from light to upgraded light don't need any change in division template.

I would say this correct, but Podcat's example was if the player of Germany wanted to keep 1/ 2/ 3 Pz Divisions as Pz II's then he would need to spend XP to create a new tank division template for the PzIII/IV battalions. The game engine would then leave the existing tank divisions alone and the player would build new divisions based on the new template.
