Wondering how Phenom IIs do, they're rather cheaper than i7s.
An Athlon II X2 or Phenom II X2 would probably be the best bang for buck for Victoria 2, since they have respectable single threaded performance and are really cheap. i7s are certainly powerful but you really need programmes which can use all 8 or 12 of their threads (like video rendering and encoding) for them to be worth the purchasing price.

Yeah, that's why the biggest thing I'd consider is an i5-750. Unfortunately, it didn't exist when the big HOI 3 benchmark thread was going on, neither did most Athlon IIs and i7/Phenom II had just hit the market. In short, most of the chips I'm considering for a build today didn't exist. From the thread I could tell that the game rather preferred the i7 architecture, but seriously, what doesn't?

It'll be even worse this time next year with Bulldozer and Sandy Bridge out.

Phenom is better than Athlon. I would go for Phenom X2 555 For gpu Ati 5750 1 gb version. If you uses a 32bit OS, you need 2gb ram, for 64bit OS, you should have at least 4gb ram.

That would give you power enough to run Vicky. The only downside for Ati card, is that none of the paradox programmers, AFAIK, uses ATI card. So there can be ATI only bugs.

I don't expect either to be better at Clausewitz engine games, seeing as Bulldozer is focusing on increasing core count and Sandy Bridge reducing power consumption and adding AVX extensions.

You son't need much more RAM just by using a 64bit OS, using one will just allow you to take advantage of more than ~3.2GB.

Can I run it?

I have a good computer with a pretty lame video card, and HOI3 ran like crap.

If HoI3 ran poorly, then probably not. If your video card is an integrated one (as most intel ones tend to be) then what you are seeing for your video card stat is maximum RAM when it borrows free RAM from your processor. Since Paradox games shunt all graphics work to the video card memory so that the actual data processing can be handled by the main computer RAM, anything that draws RAM from the main processor is going to slow the game down massively overall.

That would probably be the same GMA 4500 that makotech222 and I were debating earlier. He believes it would be unacceptable but I believe it will be adequate at low resolutions.

The Mobile Radeon 3650 chip should be plenty good enough.

Unoptimized for me, a quick handssoff run says about 6-7 seconds per month currently.

woow that means if nothing happens to slow down time a rough time period to play the through from 1836-1935 would be 128.7 minutes thats just over two hours to play through the whole game. remember thats not a bad thing however.

Multi-Core comatability

Hey guys, sorry if I'm being anal here, but I really want to know if Vic2 is going to run well.

I bought Hoi3 and it ran terrible on my quad-core...even with 1.4 it still lags like badly after the Germans declare war on Russia...I understand it was my choice to buy it and so I'm really not in the position to complain, but still, in the shoes of a college student with a part-time job, it was a waste of money.

So before I consider to spend my money on Vic2 I'd really would like to know if multi-cores were put in mind when developing the game.

Thanks.

Ripped from the OT thread:

Do we want multicore support? Yes, of course. As you say it would drastically improve our performance because we do a lot of number crunching. Top priority however, no. Fixing gamebreaking bugs has top priority. Implementing proper multicore support takes time and that time has to be taken from somewhere else.

Also remember that we did a lot of single-threaded optimizations in HoI3 since its release, and those optimizations benefit everyone, not just the people with the newest hardware.

We know multicore/manycore is the future, within a few years it will definitely be required, but we must also take time to implement it properly.

You shouldnt be playing new strategy games if you dont even have a dual core CPU. I dont think a single core has ever been made for like 5 years now. Anything older than that wont run the game anyways :p
