i have a lenovo x200t, and you overestimate the performance difference between integrated graphics generations. Victoria 1 ran, but it wasnt enjoyable speed. it was very laggy and disappointing.

Victoria is pre-Clausewitz game and the performance is much more set by CPU then graphic card.

im aware of that, and my cpu is a 45nm intel core 2 @ 2.0ghz It should be at least decent speed. Im 95% sure its the graphics. My laptop can barely run runescape at above 20fps. Victoria is a 10 year-ish old game.

The system requirements are huge!

What the heck? I was browsing Gamersgate and found Victoria 2 and according to GamersGate these are the system requirements:

# Windows XP/Vista/7.0
# Intel® Pentium® IV 2.4 GHz or AMD 3500+
# 2GB RAM
# 2 GB hard disk space, NVIDIA® GeForce 8800 or ATI Radeon® X1900 video card,
# Direct X-compatible sound card,
# DirectX®: DirectX 9
# 3-button mouse, keyboard, speakers,
# Internet connection for multiplayer
# MULTI-PLAYER UP TO 32 PLAYERS

I thought Paradox said the requirements would be on par with those of HOI 3, and yet they sound much more demanding!

What the??????

Please don't tell me these are the real requirements! HOI 3 could be running faster as it it is!

If you are able to run HoI3 fine with little or no problem then you should have no problem with Victoria 2

That is my experience.

And the specs listed aren't exactly astronomical, most basic PCs sold in the past 2-3 years are going to have 2.4 GHz processor or better and either Vista or 7 installed, and the min video card listed is well over 3 years old to boot.

Well, as I said, I ran Victoria and EU3 on slower machines than yours and enjoyed them just fine so either you have very high expectations or you have some non-GPU problem. I do expect V2 to be somewhat more demanding than EU3 though.

Uhh, no, not quite.

Vicky2 will have all the economic things going on in the background that EU3 won't have, for one, but unless Paradox have suddenly forgotten how to code, or V2 is more complicated than first appears, I'd wager that it'll easily run on lower spec machines than HoI3 does.
Especially because it doesn't have nearly as many provinces as HoI3 does. I'm betting it'll run pretty fast.

Will the game unplayable if using only a 2-button mouse?
Possibly only un-zoomable, as HoI3 was before one of the patches added zoom buttons.

But seriously, no mouse-wheel? How can you survive nowadays? With "nowadays" being "since 2000"?

Well I'm thinking of upgrading soon. The Radeon 5670 looks like a good choice to me. Maybe you can get slightly better bang for buck with a similar priced Geforce or a 4000 series card but you get Directx 11 functionality, which might be useful if I'm still using the computer in 3 years time.

It runs HoI3 (at least at the start; I haven't actually played during the war yet except very briefly to test some things). Note this is with Windows XP; I don't use Vista and I'm just starting to use Win 7 on a test basis.

Those are the same as the HOI3 requirements. Go check. Not the manual (they got revised, the manual was never updated).
Part of the problem is that NVidia made over half a dozen 8800 variants, ranging between $200 performance mainstream cards to $600 8800 Ultras, which makes the 8800 a very ambiguous level of performance.
Honestly, any dedicated card made in the last half decade will run the game, whether it runs it well is another issue. The other thing is that Clausewitz seems to respond more to memory size than GPU speed. The GT220 is by no means a high end card, it seems to work fine. Most cards made currently have 512 MB or 1 GB of dedicated graphics memory, which is plenty.

As for the CPU, I have a computer from 2003 sitting about 10 feet from me with a CPU that's faster than that. It was a cheap box back then too, didn't even have an AGP slot for a video card, had to find a PCI based card to make KOTOR run:rofl:. Any (and I do mean any) desktop Core 2/i3/i5/i7 processor is faster than a 2.4GHz P4.

no mouse-wheel, swiping the surface let me scroll, but it's no button. If the third is only for zooming, there will be no problem.

Well, according to System Requirements Lab.Com these are my specs:

CPU: AMD Phenom(tm) II X2 550.
CPU: Speed: 3.10 GHz.
RAM: 5 GB.
OS: Windows 7-64 bit.
GPU: GeForce 8800 GT

GPU features:

Video RAM: 2.7 GB (Note: I suspect that the card doesn't actually have this much memory and just barrows from those 5 GB or RAM, but then again what do I know).
3D: Yes
Hardware T&L: Yes
Pixel Shader version: 4.0
Vertex Shader version: 4.0

DirectX version: 10.

Isn't that more then enough to run Victoria 2 and get at least a fairly smooth experience? :)

It looks like it should work. If you can play HoI3 (which I think you did say in a previous post you could) then you should be able to play V2.

Of course, best thing if you are still unsure will be to wait for the eventual demo Paradox will likely make a week or so before commercial release and try it. If you can play that, then you'll most likely be able to play the game.

Should be. How well does that run current versions of HOI3/SF? Wondering how Phenom IIs do, they're rather cheaper than i7s. I haven't played since I dropped XP for Windows 7 (HOI3 1.3 I think) since my system wasn't moving things along fast enough.
