  • BATTLETECH - Backer
One thing that bother me in the game at the moment is that every character is in capacity to be like any other character.
They do not have defining traits.

I would have like during the creation process of my character to pick something that makes him special.
A perk, a trait, a special line of skill.

There are multiple things that came to me while brainstorming the possibilities.
First, their theme:
Leader
Athlete
Brawler

I thought those specific characterisation of Mechwarriors could use the same design as the current line of the game is using with Gun, Pilot, tactic.
Brainstorming a bit more down that line, I thought that such skill should not be as expansive than the ones we currently use.
Because my thought is that, if such skills would be available, only one power should be linked to them.
Thus, instead of having about 10 levels (11?) and 2 linked powers. They would only have 6 levels and 1 linked power.

Although, the idea of having a 9th level unlocking a 2nd skill which would replace the 2nd skill from the current schools is a neat idea.
Either having some skills in leadership and being a specialised tactician or having some skills in tactics but being a specialised leader.
The idea is interesting, but, I think it would be quite asking on the designers of the game.
Halving the skill barre for perks in half and allowing for a single special feat, would already be a great step.

On top of the theme, I thought maybe perks shouldn't be available to just anybody.
They should be rare.
The character you create at the beginning of the game belongs to the category of individual that access special perks.
Now again, this is a design decisions.
That would make keeping watch on available Mechwarriors an interesting part of the game through and through, because a captain would certainly like to have the best available pilots for himself.
Starting with only casual mechwarriors without any perks in the band.

Characteristics:
Leadership:
The capacity to start with better morale on the battleground
To generate more morale
To add resistance to injuries (because people are more committed and forget about their injuries)
As a possible active skill: ends turn of character but adds +1 initiative to an ally target.
> This would cost morale

Athlete:
Better movement speed (in %)
Better standing/stability capacities (damn I forgot the ingame termination).
Possible skill: sprint + action.
> This would cost morale

Brawler
Not fleshed out, I was thinking about a character who is better at meleeing.
But it seems Athlete might already fit this.
Although, Active skill of athlete might be restricted to sprint + ranged attack, which would quality it a bit more of a skirmisher.
Then,
Better melee damage
More unstead damage with melee
Passive: guard after melee?

p.s: I am late for a meeting, I might come back to this thread edit some parts.
