You guys are all missing out Africa. It is the most violent continent, so one must surmise the security forces there are good, in the countries where some form of order is maintanined. I must say I think the Selous Scouts and South African Special Forces (Recces) were and still are very good. They operated without any air support; if you were detected or under heavy fire you had to make it out by yourself. Wounded, your problem.
They also directly contested the Russians and Cubans, and if you got to their veterans website, you will see one post where an ex spetsnaz credits them for being outstanding. Just mentioning.

:D

Er...nope. :p

Spetsnaz is short for Spetsialnoe naznachenie, i.e. (Troops with a) Special Designation/Purpose.

BTW, I find those guys saying "SAS is the best!" of "Delta Force rules!" kinda lame. It's all just national pride. Ever seen them do their thing? Ever compared that to a unit from another country do that same thing? I thought so...

Nope. Did I claim they could whoop <insert nation> special forces' ass any day? With one hand tied behind to their back? And blind folded?

I never made such a claim.

Still, you have seen ASF in action. Of course, that's very impressive. I find a machine gun impressive too, that doesn't mean it isn't powerless against a tank.

I'm not saying ASF isn't a great army unit (I'm sure they are), I just think 99% of the people here have never seen a special forces unit in action, let alone several to base their opinion on.

Yeah, I noticed that. I was just making a statement. These kinda threads almost always evolve into a shouting match between a bunch of rednecks about who's got the longest ****. C'mon, who here can say he has seen the American, British, German, French, Israeli and Russian special forces in action? No one. So, what are all these "experts" basing their opinion on? Just yelling "SAS is the best!" doesn't make it so, although I am aware of their awesome reputation.

Well, you didn't hear much from me, that's for sure. Don't know much about them. I'm sure they are great, but I have no idea how they compare to Western special forces units. I don't think that, if there is a difference, it's very big. It's much easier for Russia to keep a small elite unit in great shape, than a large army.

I tried to google for "spetsnaz history missions", but there's not much info on these guys. I think that at least proves they're the best in the world at camouflage!

I saw some...

Spetsnaz is of course good but could you clarify what sort of Spetsnaz you are asking for? There is such a unit Spetsnaz GRU - these are highly trained universal soldiers - if they are deployed that means all other options were unseccessful and that means that no one is gonna survive - they don't take PoWs.

Spetsnaz GRU - Special Forces of Chief Intelligence Agency of C.-in-C. HQ.

Spentsaz had seen a lot of combat in Afganistan, when they were radiing Muschaheideen lines, and put ambushes etc...
They were the only russian unit who could respond quickly and work in small scale operations.

In a WWIII they were expected to be dropped or inserted along the mine advance lines, up to 150km in the rear and there sabotage and confuse the enemy. The expected losses were 50% (in the first day or two)

A lot of the Spentzas memebers were athlets, as they were picked for the duty.

When the Sovjet union broke up, they were involved in the coup attempt in Estonia.

The creazy Serbs(tm) had have some crack elite units.

Do not mix please some real Spetsnaz groups like 'Alpha' and Army Special Forces - they are pretty different. 'Alpha' is not supposed to participate in active warfares - their domain is only special operations - like release of hostages, capture of some building, plane, bus or something whereas Army Special Forces are trained to act at the rear of the enemy, but in this respect you can refer most Russian paratroopers or marines - since their qualification is very much the same - they're mostly trained in diversionist tactics and direct strike combat operations - like 101st Company Pskov Paratroop Division which died but for 3 soldiers when defending against over 3,000 Chechen fighters being totally cut from the main Russian forces and being totally encircled.

There are "real" Spetsaz units in the russian army, and quite a lot of them, with me thinks something like one batalion assigned to each army. It seems however there are other groups (antiterror units) which use the same name, however aren't those Spetsaz.

I am not really that sure if you speak about Army Spetsnaz - then it should be Spetsnaz GRU - and they are not that numerous, training takes a lot of effort and time, recently with Russia recovering its independence from USSR - there were the so-called "Madder Berets" (they are not numerous either, maybe 2 bataillions for all Russian Army) - well they are shown in here Russia very often on TV, especially the entrance exam - even some tough marines and paratroopers sometimes fail to pass it, just imagine - cross-country race, crawling under fire, full ammo and flak jacket, several guns, different stuff - running through marshes and lakes with water over the head, and then after 6 hours of all that stuff - you have to fight against fresh karate training instructor for 15 minutes and you're prohibited to fall down. So when you finish it up - your face looks more of a total mess :)

Hmm, this thread has gotten sort of off topic as I've been reading it. First, I'll say that I think the best average soldier is the Israeli soldier, though I have great respect for British, American, and some European soldiers.

As for who is the best Spec Ops, for anti-terrorist, I think you've got to go with the SAS. For infiltration, it's probably the US Navy SEALs. For combat assault it's probably the Green Berets or the Royal Marine Commandos (who are pretty badass though they're not really Spec Ops forces).

Off topic? Trying to find out where all the "experts" get their info from and what "the best" is supposed to mean? I don't think that's off topic. But, since it is common to let nationalism guide your choice and no further explanation is required:

Spetsnaz is the best! Wooheeeeeeeeeeee!
