I conquered Spain as Portugal, after its civil war ended, in my 5th Empire game. And the territory behaves quite erratic on each playthrough (always ahistorical AI)
In one I thoought I would push the democratic side to victory by sending an attache enhancing their troops. Worked, they won, I used the "Nationalist Intervention" Focus to secure a wargoal and attacked. They joined the comintern immediately and the russian fleet and army appeared and crushed me, playthrough over.
Next I boosted the nationalists, and checked their focus tree if I should change to fascist government or not, depending on their choices (they must have a different government than mine). Worked like a charm. I even managed to do a collaboration government mission on their territory during the civil war and when I conquered them fot collaboration bonus. Then took on china, Non aligned Japan joined in on the opportunity, China unified under its own faction, suddenly switched to comintern, Russia got crushed by a fascist menace made up of Italy, Germany and UK and all the territory I conquered from China suddenly made up 11% war score in the peace treaty, also almost immediately wargoal was made against me by Japan, which joined the axis, 8,5 million men at my border in 1943, playthrough over.
Now different approach, but same tactics in Spain. But this time the collaboration efforts were for nothing (even did 2 missions) because although the Nationalists won the releasable nation was this time the communist version, with which I had not build any collaboration bonus. Also several states of spain completely lack the compliance mode, like Madrid, Extremadura, Guadalajara, Ciudad Real, Murica, Cordoba and two or three more. There is no foreign claim on it, but it is also not any core of mine. So if I would release Spain as collaboration nation it would not get these states. It also messes up the anti-partisan agenda of my agents, as I cannot employ them in these states (no la resistánce there) thus loosing out on adjacency effects. I have to set one alone into Cataluna because Easter Aragon cuts it off from the rest of resisting states.
