Once the Spanish Civil War starts (july 18th 1936), I would like to be able to choose a side, rather than being forced to continue with the republicans.

That must be easy to do....

Uhm no, actually, while I don't have HOI, with Vicky and EUII's event engine it should be esaily possible.

Event: War breaks out.

Option a: Stay with the republicans, grant nationalists independence, start war.

Option b: change to nationalist (via the country = XXX command), grant republicans independence, start war.

May need 2 events though, as the event effects usually happen all at once

Maybe, but it hasn't been used before in HoI, even if the engine would allow it. That's a possibility, but only if HoI 2 would include that kind of commands. Not all Paradox games have the same commands available. Can't really go beyond that. In any case, in HoI, using the selection screen it's already easy enough to choose which Spain you want to keep playing as.

I can do it, you can do it, all Paradoxians propably can... But can the Common Joe do it? That`s the big question... And the answer is most propably that of: "no".

"As long as it is not in game, it is not a feature" - That is the word on the street, I suppose. And one, two events never killed a game, did they?

Good point.

And necessary too. Will make Co-op multiplayer games as Republican Spain from 1936 scenario very interesting... :D

(And as I have said before - should be possible with all countries to have a Civil War in Co-op multiplayer)

Saving and re-loading as a new country also screws up the game somewhat. There are a lot of AI events that check to see if a country is AI-controlled or not (and never checks again).

Besides, it only makes sense to allow the player to switch from Republican to Nationalist Spain ingame (although it's really easy for someone playing Republican Spain to exploit and set things up to guarantee a Nationalist victory).

Scw

Do it will be possible a 'The Prelude' Scenario starting in July 18th, 1936, with both sides playable and historical forces and events deployed (and maybe the historical foreign expeditionary forces, with their unit stats adjusted for availability)? Perhaps it is my opinion, but in order to a more historical approach, I see better this date as the most logical beginning for the events to come rather than an arbitrary point like January 1st (I speak as it was in HoI, I don´t know what is in HoI2). It would take some additional work, like adjusting ships and other units and/or techs in the timeline production, but it perhaps would give a more adecuate starting point.

Also a brief historical note: the SCW started really in July 17th (that should be the event date in HoI), though it was the 18th that it widespead over all the peninsula (date which should correspond to the 'Nationalist Spain: a fascist nation' event in HoI), day which named the 'Alzamiento' (Uprising), and which is mostly (wrong) known abroad as the war beginning.

Well, it is written in fairly large lettering on the frontend how to change the country you will be playing. Besides, weren't you the one campaigning for an eventless game? :p ;)

The only problem with starting the game on July 17 is that then the game wouldn't be able to model the Italian conquest of Ethiopia.

Other than that, I totally agree that July 17 is a better starting point than Jan. 1st.

That's right.
However, I don't know why but for my parents -who grew up in those years- the day of the "Alzamiento Nacional" is the 18th, and it was a national holiday...
Funny isn't it?

Well, the first shots of the war took place on the 17th (in Melilla, in Spanish Morocco) but that was sort of a fluke. The rising was originally planned for the morning of the 18th, but the plotters at Melilla were discovered early and had to move fast.

There were a couple of other towns in Morocco that rose on the 17th, but the Canaries and the garrisons in Spain itself didn't rise until the 18th. Franco delivered his manifesto (essentially declaring war on Republican Spain) in the early morning of July 18th.

"The Prelude" as a walkthrough

Playing the spanish civil war would serve as an excellent walkthrough on how the game works. It could start out with the outbreak of the war (or a bit before), and the player would get to use both land, air and naval forces to win the war, as well as do some research, build and diplomacy.

If the player wins the walkthrough-war, he could get the option to play all through the game as Spain, or start fresh with a mayor power.

Tutorial, eh??

Maybe it could be one of the battle scenarios also (??) I admit I am moved by my patriotism, jeje
