Having a lot of fun in NSB as Soviets but in the new patch I'm having real problems intervening in the Spanish civil war. Previously I'd send my tank divisions, create nice pretty encirclements in areas without the debuff and handily win as whichever major I was intervening with.

Now, however, when I do this as USSR the republicans seem to not have the ability to defend say kind of front or supply line, especially given the layout of the Spanish railway system. Even on the occasions I do make an impact in the south, the nationalists have marched all the way yo Madrid with barely any resistance. I've started to feel like intervening is just throwing away resources, has anyone got any advice on how to approach the intervention?

For reference, currently sending 6 tank divisions under Zhukov after disbanding some of the ones you start with so they are full strength, 100 fighter and tac, and an attache.

One thing I noticed is that a lot of the soviet light tank designs are crap to start out with. 10 speed, 2 armor. They just suck vs the 3 tank divisions I send as Germany.

It is very frustrating. I know the Mass assault doctrine sucks. but these things should do better.

I think it could be the designs.

And like you I noticed the supply is always an issue.

The deck is stacked for the nationalists.

Don't attack in regions where your air superiority is contested. Always check the air map and make sure the Axis aircraft are in a different zone.

Yes, now the Spanish Civil War is clearly made against the USSR. If before the NSB Soviet intervention was real, because the tank troops. But now the USSR has nothing to send to Spain: the USSR starts with a huge shortage of weapons, tanks, artillery (which is unhistorical). Huge debuffs for volunteers and irritating volunteer recalls after the anarchist uprising. The Republicans only have a good chance of winning if you play like Italy or Germany and don't help Franco.

I've been having a bit more success and my latest game as the russians had me push the SCW into late '38. Still not a win, but previously I wasn't able to get past '37. Two things I did differently this game were supply more than just guns (e.g. convoys, artillery and support equipment) and focus more on crushing the south. Someone mentioned in another thread that they thought it was because the anarchist uprising cut off a bunch of divisions and I'm starting to agree with this. It seems like a big part of the rapid demise is just lack of numbers.

I've won the SCW multiple times as SOV in NSB...but yeah it is incredibly difficult now. Tips:

1. Send liaison
2. Lend lease A LOT (disbanding all of your useless cavalry and NKVD divisions helps with the equipment shortages, only after you've sent your first batch of 6 volunteer divisions though)
3. Always exploit areas where the debuff is removed immediately trying to get encirclements
4. When not exploiting un-debuffed areas spread your divisions around to help the republicans defend wherever you can
5. Consider sending mountaineer divisions (tanks are the worst in Spain now IMO thanks to the terrain/weather rework, too many mountains and hills)
6. Put your ground support planes on close air support AND logistics strike

Hopefully this helps at least some. Even with this and perfect micro I still find it extremely difficult...could definitely use some balance work.
