Well, the treaty following the Mexican-American war never happened, even though I took all of Mexico. The civil war ended properly. Now I am in the Spanish-American war, and it won't freaking end. I have all of the territories I am supposed to have, but no event. I can't find an event in the game files, and I can't use diplomacy to get peace because Spain won't agree to it. Do I have to go takeover mainland Spain? I am trying to stay somewhat in the same ballpark as history here...

I don't know what's wrong, but press f12, type in neville and make your demands. Then remember to type neville again.

Yeah, that's what I ended up doing. I really hate having to use a cheat, but somehow my event-fired war with Spain became a "great war" so France had joined them. With France as an ally, Spain wasn't going to back down I guess. I had the same thing happen with the Boxer Rebellion event, sort of. Was a "great war" with the Japanese as China's allies. China was a pushover, and I just wanted to take a few things and get a peace, and they were happy to oblige me, but Japan was an impossible situation. I wasn't allowed to attack Japan because I had entered the Boxer Rebellion as a colonial war, but Japan could attack me all day long. All I could do was keep defending my gains from Japan. I couldn't get a peace with them, so I had to use neville again.

Very strange.

Usually if you consolidate your position and wait a few months, you will eventually get a generous peace offer or a white peace offer from them.

Don't cheat just because you want to end the war right now.

There is an AI parameter called "stubborness" or "frustration" or something like that which determines how quickly the AI will offer you a white peace when nothing happens in the war. All nations except the ones with ferocious AIs will eventually offer you a peace if you hold out long enough and the war is stalemated.

Man, this went on for a long time in the game. Much much longer than a few months. With France as an ally of Spain, Spain just would not agree to even a white peace, much less give me the territories of the Philippines at a minimum. I even took over about half a dozen territories in mainland Spain (which was very difficult, let me tell you). In the Boxer Rebellion scenario, I was at war with Japan but could not fight them. It was an impossible situation. I am sure that eventually war frustration might have forced them to a white peace, but I have a feeling that losing territory speeds that process up a bit. I couldn't take any Japanese territory, so their war frustration (I am guessing) was not going to rise much more than at a snail's pace. I agree with you about cheating, I don't like it at all, but in the case of the Boxer Rebellion scenario, it was a bogus situation and cheating to get out of it gained me nothing. Staying at war for some extended period would not have been detrimental other than as an annoyance. I just was tired of the pop-ups about Japan attacking me a-freaking-gain, always losing. Really annoying.

Is there something that causes these to become "Great Wars" and makes it so hard to get out of them? Because both of these became "Great Wars".
